AI shifts work roles, says Colliers

• AI is augmenting roles rather than replacing employees, says Colliers
• 100% of corporate occupiers expect new specialised AI-driven roles
• Workforces will become leaner and more senior-weighted within five years

The conversation about AI in the workplace often defaults to a single fear: job losses. But a new report from Colliers suggests this view is incomplete, arguing that AI's real impact is a much deeper transformation of roles, skills, and spaces.

From Replacement to Augmentation

The prevailing narrative of AI as a job destroyer is being challenged by a more nuanced reality: augmentation. According to a recent Colliers report on forces shaping corporate real estate, the primary effect of AI is on the nature of work itself. Instead of outright replacing employees, AI is set to automate repetitive, routine tasks, freeing up human workers to concentrate on higher-value activities that require creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving. A recent Workday report echoes this, finding that 40% of business leaders expect AI to help them get more value from their existing employees, compared to just 28% who anticipate headcount reduction. This shift transforms the employee from a doer of tasks to a strategic thinker augmented by powerful tools, enhancing productivity and efficiency.

The Great Reskilling Imperative

This new, augmented reality makes continuous learning non-negotiable. With AI handling routine work, the skills that command a premium are changing. A Colliers survey found that 100% of corporate occupiers expect AI to create new, specialized roles requiring different skills and capabilities. The focus is moving beyond basic AI literacy to a deeper, more practical expertise. Companies in India are increasingly investing in role-specific training, from prompt engineering to AI-powered workflow automation. The emphasis is on building human-centric skills—communication, emotional intelligence, and adaptability—that AI cannot replicate. This is a call to action for both employers and employees to invest heavily in upskilling and reskilling to remain relevant in an AI-driven economy.

The Office Becomes a Hub for Collaboration

If AI automates tasks once done at a desk, what is the office for? The Colliers report argues that AI elevates the importance of the physical workplace as a critical hub for knowledge exchange and collaboration. As routine work diminishes, the office's purpose shifts from a place of productivity to a stage for purpose, creativity, and connection. This is already influencing office design. In India, there's a growing demand for high-quality, tech-enabled, and sustainable spaces that foster collaboration. Companies are rethinking layouts to balance private, focused work with dynamic, collaborative zones. The office is no longer just a collection of desks but a strategic asset for attracting talent and driving innovation in an AI-augmented world.

Leaner, More Senior, and Flexible Teams

The structure of teams is also set to change. One Indian study found that 96% of AI-native firms and 75% of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) expect a more senior_weighted workforce within five years. As AI handles more entry_level, execution_based tasks, the demand for mid_level and senior specialists who can supervise, validate, and make judgment calls is rising. These leaner, more expert_heavy teams require a different kind of workspace—one that prioritizes premium, flexible infrastructure over sheer headcount capacity. This is driving significant demand for flexible and managed office spaces, allowing companies to adapt their real estate footprint as team sizes and project needs evolve in the fluid, AI_driven landscape.
