Your Digital Food Safety Toolkit
Food Safety Connect is an FSSAI initiative designed to empower consumers. It primarily functions through a mobile app (available on Android and iOS) and a web portal. The goal is to create a single, reliable channel where you can get information, verify
the legitimacy of a food business, and raise concerns about the food you eat. Think of it as a direct line to the food safety ecosystem, putting a degree of control right into your hands. FSSAI has been actively encouraging citizens to act as the 'eyes' of the regulator by using this platform to report violations, from unhygienic kitchens to suspect products.
How to Verify a Food Business
One of the platform's most powerful features is the ability to verify an FSSAI license. Every registered food business operator (FBO) in India—from manufacturers to local eateries—is given a unique 14-digit license number. This number should be displayed on packaged products and at the business premises. Using the Food Safety Connect app or portal, you can enter this number to check the business's details, including its name, address, and license validity. This simple check helps confirm that the business is registered and accountable to food safety standards. FSSAI has also mandated that businesses display a QR code that makes accessing this information even easier.
Lodging a Complaint: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you encounter an issue, the platform provides a structured way to report it. You can file complaints about a wide range of problems, including suspected adulteration, expired products, poor hygiene at an outlet, misleading advertisements, or incorrect labelling. The process is straightforward: after downloading the app and registering, you select the option to lodge a new complaint. You'll need to provide details of the food business, describe the issue, and—most importantly—upload evidence like photos, videos, or bills. Once submitted, you receive a unique tracking ID to monitor the status of your grievance.
What Happens After You Complain?
Once lodged, a complaint is routed to the relevant jurisdictional authority for investigation and action. The system is designed to escalate issues through various levels. The first point of contact may be a nodal officer appointed by the food business itself, followed by state-level food safety authorities. If you're not satisfied with the resolution, the platform allows you to re-raise or escalate the complaint. This multi-tiered approach aims to ensure that grievances are addressed, but it also means that resolution is not always instantaneous and may require follow-up.
Understanding the Limitations
While Food Safety Connect is a valuable tool, it's not a magic wand. The headline's caution about trusting the strongest claims is important here. The effectiveness of the system depends heavily on the responsiveness of the authorities handling the case. Some consumers have reported issues with tracking complaints or a lack of clear information on the action taken. Furthermore, the system is primarily digital, which can present a barrier for those in rural or semi-urban areas with limited digital literacy. The platform empowers you to report issues, but the broader regulatory processes for enforcement, penalties, and legal disputes can be complex and time-consuming.
