The Game-Changer: UPI on Credit Cards
For years, UPI payments were a direct debit from your bank account, offering convenience but zero rewards. That has changed. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) enabled RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe,
and Paytm. This means when you scan a merchant QR code, you can choose to pay using your linked RuPay credit card instead of your savings account. Every transaction is charged to your card's credit limit, and just like a regular card swipe, these spends become eligible for reward points. Suddenly, your vegetable vendor payment or your chai break is no longer just an expense; it's a micro-investment towards a larger reward. Only RuPay credit cards support this feature for QR code payments at merchants; Visa and Mastercard credit cards currently cannot be linked in the same way.
From Points to Planes: The Conversion Path
Earning points is the first step; converting them into flights is the goal. This happens in two main ways. The first is by redeeming points directly for flight vouchers or bookings on your bank's reward portal. For example, some cards offer NeuCoins that can be used for Air India flights, where 1 NeuCoin equals ₹1. The second, often more valuable method, is transferring your bank's reward points to an airline's frequent flyer program. Many premium credit cards, like certain ones from Axis Bank, have partnerships with airlines. You can convert your accumulated EDGE Reward Points into Air India's Maharaja Points or Vistara's Club Vistara points, often at a favourable ratio. This strategy can unlock significant value, especially for booking business class seats or during peak travel seasons, where the cash value of a ticket is high.
Top Cards for Earning Travel Rewards on UPI
Not all RuPay credit cards are created equal. To maximize travel benefits, you need a card with a good UPI reward rate and strong travel redemption partners. The Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card is a popular choice, offering 1.5% back as NeuCoins on eligible UPI spends on its RuPay variant, capped at 500 NeuCoins per month. These NeuCoins can be directly redeemed for flights on Air India through the Tata Neu app. Another strong contender is the Scapia Federal Bank RuPay Credit Card, which is designed for travel. It offers rewards in the form of Scapia Coins on UPI spends over ₹500, which can then be used for travel bookings on its platform. For premium users, the Axis Bank Magnus RuPay variant allows high-value UPI spends to earn EDGE Reward Points, which are transferable to multiple airline partners. However, its high annual fee means it's best suited for those who can maximize its overall benefits.
Read the Fine Print Before You Spend
Before you start paying for everything via your UPI-linked credit card, it's crucial to understand the limitations. Most banks impose a monthly cap on the rewards you can earn from UPI transactions. For instance, the Tata Neu Infinity card caps UPI rewards at 500 NeuCoins per month. Furthermore, certain transaction categories are often excluded from earning rewards. These typically include rent payments, wallet loads, insurance premiums, and fuel purchases. Some cards may also have a minimum transaction value to qualify for rewards, like the ₹500 threshold for Scapia. Always check the latest terms and conditions on the bank's website, as these rules can change. Understanding these caps and exclusions is key to ensuring your spending strategy is genuinely rewarding.
