A New Direct Connection
The biggest news for aspiring Canada travellers is Air India's seasonal non-stop service between Mumbai and Toronto. This new route will operate three times a week from October 25, 2026, to March 26, 2027. Previously, direct flights were primarily available
from Delhi, but this new connection makes Toronto significantly more accessible for those in western and southern India. The flights will be on upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, promising a more comfortable journey. This service is a game-changer, cutting down on the long layovers and travel fatigue that often come with flights to North America.
First Step: The Visitor Visa
Before you even think about booking your flight, you need to secure a Canadian visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). It is critical to know that Canada does not offer a visa on arrival for Indian citizens, so applying well in advance is mandatory. The process is done online through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Be prepared to provide documents like a valid passport, proof of financial support, a detailed travel itinerary, and evidence of ties to India that show you will return after your visit. Processing times can vary significantly based on the volume of applications, so it's wise to start the process at least three to four months before your planned travel date. Current estimates for 2026 suggest an average processing time of around 70 to 88 days for Indian applicants.
Best Time to Visit Toronto
Canada is a country of four distinct seasons, and your experience will change dramatically depending on when you go. The most popular time to visit Toronto is during the summer, from June to August. The weather is warm, perfect for exploring the city's parks, attending festivals like the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, and taking a ferry to the Toronto Islands. However, this is also peak season, meaning higher prices for flights and accommodation. For pleasant weather with fewer crowds and lower costs, consider the shoulder seasons: spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). Spring offers beautiful cherry blossoms, while autumn showcases stunning fall foliage. Winter (December-February) is extremely cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, but it's the most budget-friendly time to visit and offers unique experiences like ice skating and the Toronto Light Festival.
Budgeting Your Canadian Dream
A trip to Canada from India requires careful financial planning. A budget-conscious 10-day trip can cost between ₹2.5 to ₹3 lakhs per person. This would include return flights (₹60,000-₹90,000), budget accommodation, food, local transport, and some activities. For a more comfortable mid-range experience, with better hotels and more dining out, it's safer to budget around ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 lakhs. To save money, consider travelling during the shoulder seasons (April-May or September-November) when flight and hotel prices are lower. Booking flights and accommodation several months in advance can also lead to significant savings. Also, remember that Canada is largely a cashless society, so having a good forex card or a credit card with tap-to-pay functionality is essential.
Packing for the Great White North
Packing for Canada is very different from packing for a trip within India. The key is to pack in layers. Even in summer, evenings can get cool, so a light jacket or sweater is a must. If you’re visiting in the spring or autumn, you'll need a mix of sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and a medium-weight jacket. For a winter trip, heavy-duty winter gear is non-negotiable. This includes a thermal base layer, fleece jackets, a waterproof and insulated outer jacket, winter boots, a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you'll likely be doing a lot of exploring on foot. Also, don't forget a power adapter; Canada uses Type A and B plugs.
