A Welcome Festive Announcement
To manage the immense passenger demand during the Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja season, Central Railway has announced it will operate 418 special train services. These trains will run between October and November 2026, connecting major Mumbai terminals
like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) with high-demand destinations across the country. The goal is to provide much-needed capacity on routes that are typically sold out weeks in advance, offering a lifeline to those planning to travel home for the holidays. These services will primarily cater to states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, among others.
Key Routes and Destinations
These special services cover a wide range of popular routes. Some of the major connections from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region include daily trains from CSMT to Gorakhpur, weekly AC specials to Chennai, and bi-weekly services to Latur. Other significant destinations include Nagpur, Kolhapur, Banaras, and Mau. For instance, 64 daily services will run between CSMT and Gorakhpur, while 12 weekly AC specials will operate to Chennai. This extensive network is designed to ease the burden on regular trains and give passengers more options, but with millions vying for these seats, knowing the plan is crucial.
The Golden Rule: Book Instantly
The single most important strategy for securing a ticket on these special trains is to book the moment reservations open. For many of these 418 services, bookings began on September 27 and 28, 2026. Special train bookings often have a shorter advance reservation period (ARP) than the usual 120 days for regular trains. Seats on high-demand routes can vanish within minutes, not hours. Waiting even a day can be the difference between a confirmed berth and a long waitlist. Set a calendar reminder and be ready at your computer or phone precisely when the booking window opens, which is typically 8:00 AM.
Mastering the IRCTC Booking Process
Speed is your biggest ally when booking online via the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. To save critical seconds during the booking rush, use the 'Master List' feature on your IRCTC account. This allows you to save passenger details like name, age, and ID card information in advance. When it's time to book, you can add these passengers with a single click instead of typing everything out. Ensure your preferred payment method, like a UPI wallet or net banking, is ready for a quick transaction. A slow payment process is often where potential tickets are lost to faster users.
Be Flexible with Dates and Trains
If your travel dates are not set in stone, you have a significant advantage. Try searching for tickets a day or two before or after your ideal departure date. Festive specials often run on specific days of the week, so expanding your search can reveal hidden availability. Similarly, don't just focus on the most popular, conveniently timed trains. An overnight service or one departing from a secondary terminal like Panvel or Hadapsar might have more seats available than a prime-time train from CSMT. Check all available trains on your route, not just the ones with the most convenient schedules.
Stay Informed and Have a Backup Plan
Indian Railways sometimes announces additional special trains or adds extra coaches closer to the festival dates based on demand. Follow the official social media accounts of Central and Western Railway and use the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app for the most reliable, up-to-date information. If you still end up on a waitlist, don't lose hope entirely. Monitor your PNR status daily. As a final resort, the Tatkal booking window opens one day before a train's departure (10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for Sleeper). It’s a high-stakes, high-speed gamble, but it remains a viable last-minute option for many.
