Tackling the Train Ticket Scramble
With Thiruvonam falling on August 26 this year, the demand for train tickets to Kerala is at its peak. If you're finding regular trains fully booked, don't despair. Indian Railways has announced a significant number of special train services to manage
the festive rush, with 112 special trips scheduled for the Onam season. These services connect major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai with key destinations in Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kollam, and Kottayam. Most of these special trains are running between August 14 and September 6, covering the entire peak travel period. For last-minute travellers, the Tatkal quota is a viable option. AC class Tatkal bookings open at 10:00 AM, and non-AC bookings at 11:00 AM the day before the journey. Keep checking the IRCTC portal for updates on availability and for second chart releases, which happen about four hours before departure and can free up seats from cancellations.
Navigating Road Travel Options
If train tickets are elusive, hitting the road is your next best bet. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has rolled out an extensive network of special bus services to handle the Onam demand. These services operate within Kerala and on interstate routes, connecting to hubs like Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Chennai. The main rush periods for these services are August 21-25 and August 29-September 3. To counter the exorbitant surge pricing by private bus operators, which can see fares skyrocket, KSRTC is offering a more budget-friendly alternative. You can book tickets online through their official portal or conveniently via WhatsApp by sending 'Hi' to 9447071021. KSRTC has also launched new premium services, including a Volvo Executive Class on routes like Alappuzha-Bengaluru, providing a more comfortable journey.
When Hotels Seem Fully Booked
Finding accommodation during Onam week, especially from August 25 to 28, can be challenging in popular tourist spots. If hotels in prime locations like Kochi, Alleppey, or Munnar appear sold out, it's time to think creatively. Consider looking for lodging in slightly less-travelled but equally charming towns. Destinations like Kottayam offer a rich cultural experience without the overwhelming crowds of major hubs. Another excellent option is to explore homestays. Staying with a local family not only solves your accommodation issue but also offers an authentic Onam experience, complete with a traditional home-cooked Sadhya feast. Many booking platforms feature homestays, guesthouses, and service apartments that may have last-minute availability when hotels are full. Be flexible with your location; staying a little outside the main city centre can often reveal hidden gems.
Rethink Your Destination
While destinations like Alleppey and Kochi are perennial favourites, Onam is celebrated with equal fervour across the state. This is the perfect opportunity to explore some of Kerala’s lesser-known treasures. Consider a trip to Thrissur, the cultural capital, to witness vibrant celebrations and traditional performances like Pulikali. For those who prefer nature, the verdant hills of Wayanad or the serene landscapes of Idukki offer a peaceful retreat from the festive bustle. Northern Kerala also provides a unique experience; Kannur is known for its rich artistic traditions, including Theyyam performances. Exploring these alternative locations can lead to a more unique and less crowded Onam holiday, while still allowing you to soak in the festive spirit and enjoy the state's natural beauty.
Last-Minute Booking Hacks
In the digital age, a few smart strategies can make all the difference. Use multiple apps and websites for booking flights, trains, and hotels, and set up fare alerts to be notified of price drops. For train travel, consider booking tickets from a station before or after your actual origin/destination to tap into different quotas. Don't forget about return tickets; book your journey back at the same time as your onward trip to avoid the post-Thiruvonam rush. When driving, plan to start your journey during off-peak hours, such as late at night or very early in the morning, to avoid the heavy traffic that clogs highways, especially near border checkposts. Flexibility is your greatest asset. Being open to travelling a day earlier or later, or choosing a different airport or railway station, can dramatically increase your chances of finding a booking.
