Indian Railways has announced that two key Vande Bharat services originating from Varanasi will now operate on a revised schedule. The change, implemented by the Northern Railway for operational reasons, affects the departure time from Varanasi station
only. Timings at all subsequent stops along both routes will remain unchanged. The primary goal of this revision is to streamline rail operations and improve punctuality. For passengers, this means adjusting their travel plans to the station to avoid any last-minute rush or the risk of missing their train entirely. The new timetable is officially in effect from September 2, 2026.
Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat (20888)
The first train impacted is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (train number 20888). Previously scheduled to depart at 4:05 PM, this service will now leave Varanasi at 3:55 PM. This popular train, which runs six days a week (except Tuesdays), is a vital link between Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. It covers a distance of 536 kilometres in about seven hours and 50 minutes. The route includes key stops at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Sasaram, Gaya, Koderma, Hazaribagh Road, Parasnath, Bokaro Steel City, and Muri before reaching Ranchi. While the departure from Varanasi is earlier, the arrival times at these stations and the final destination remain the same as before. This service, the 49th Vande Bharat in the country, began commercial operations in March 2024.
Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat (22500)
The second affected service is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (train number 22500). This train, which previously departed Varanasi at 6:20 AM, will now begin its journey at 6:10 AM. This is an important route, especially for pilgrims travelling to Deoghar, which is home to the revered Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple. The train connects the two cities, covering a distance of approximately 456 kilometres and providing a fast daytime travel option. As with the Ranchi service, railway officials have confirmed that the timetable revision only applies to the departure from Varanasi; all other station timings are unaffected.
Why This 10-Minute Shift Is Critical
A ten-minute adjustment might seem minor, but for train travel, it can be the difference between a smooth journey and a missed departure. Passengers who have previously travelled on these routes may be accustomed to the old timings. For instance, a traveller arriving at Varanasi station at 6:15 AM for the Deoghar train would now find that it has already left. Similarly, arriving just before 4:00 PM for the Ranchi service will no longer be sufficient. The key takeaway for passengers is to update their itineraries and plan to reach Varanasi station with enough buffer time to account for the new, earlier departure schedules. Indian Railways has advised all passengers on these routes to verify the new timings before heading to the station to avoid any inconvenience.
Other Vande Bharat Services Unchanged
It is important to note that this schedule revision is specific to the Vande Bharat services heading to Ranchi and Deoghar from Varanasi. Other popular services originating from the city, such as the high-demand Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express (22415), are not affected by this announcement. Its schedule, with a 6:00 AM departure from Varanasi, remains the same. Passengers travelling on routes other than to Ranchi and Deoghar can continue to follow the existing timetable for their respective trains.
