A New Era of 'Paw-cations'
The shift is undeniable: pets are increasingly seen as integral family members, and it's reshaping how Indians travel. Data from travel platforms shows a significant spike in searches for pet-friendly accommodations, with some seeing growth of 40-45%
in a single year. This trend, which strengthened post-pandemic, reflects a desire for shared experiences. Consequently, the hospitality industry is adapting, with operators now creating specific packages for 'paw-cations'. It's no longer a niche market but a major driver, with travellers willing to spend more to ensure their entire family, furry members included, can join the holiday. The preference is leaning heavily towards road trips, with a staggering 93% of Indian travellers favouring the flexibility of self-drive journeys.
Preparing for the Journey
Before you even think about booking, a pre-travel checklist is essential for your pet's safety and comfort. First, schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a thorough health check-up. This is the time to ensure all vaccinations, especially for rabies, are up to date. For most modes of transport, you will need a veterinary health or fitness certificate, usually issued within 48 to 72 hours of your travel date. It's also a good idea to microchip your pet, as this is a standard for identification. Finally, pack a dedicated travel kit. This should include their regular food, ample water, a familiar blanket or toy to reduce anxiety, waste bags, any necessary medications, and a first-aid kit. Gradual acclimatisation to their travel crate or car seat can also make the journey significantly less stressful.
Navigating Transport Rules: Train and Air
Traveling with pets on public transport in India requires careful planning. On Indian Railways, pets are primarily allowed in First Class AC (1A). The rule is strict: you must book the entire two-berth coupé or four-berth cabin under a single PNR to ensure no other passengers are inconvenienced. After booking your tickets, you need to submit a written request for coupe allotment. The pet's ticket itself is booked separately, often at the station's parcel office after the train chart is prepared. For air travel, policies vary by airline. Carriers like Air India and Akasa Air are known to be pet-friendly. Generally, small pets (under 7-10 kg including the carrier) may be allowed in the cabin, while larger animals travel in a temperature-controlled cargo hold. You must book your pet's spot well in advance, as flights have a limit on the number of animals they can carry.
Finding a Welcoming Place to Stay
The number of pet-friendly hotels, resorts, and homestays in India is growing rapidly. Destinations in the hills like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and coastal areas like Goa, are leading the charge with welcoming properties. However, it's crucial to clarify the specifics before booking. 'Pet-friendly' can mean different things: some places merely allow pets, while others offer dedicated amenities like pet beds, special meals, and play areas. Always call the property directly to confirm their policy, ask about any extra charges, weight or breed restrictions, and rules regarding common areas. Homestays and vacation rentals are often a preferred choice, providing more space and flexibility compared to traditional hotels.
On the Road: Safety and Comfort First
Once you're on your way, your pet's well-being is the top priority. For road trips, ensure your pet is safely secured in a well-ventilated carrier or with a car seat harness. Never leave them unattended in a parked vehicle. Plan for frequent stops every few hours to allow them to stretch, hydrate, and relieve themselves. Sticking to their regular feeding schedule as much as possible can help prevent digestive issues. When you arrive at your destination, be mindful of their behaviour. Keep them leashed in public areas unless it's a designated off-leash zone. Respect the property's rules and be considerate of other guests to ensure that more establishments continue to welcome pets in the future.
