The Mandovi Express, which connects Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Madgaon in Goa, offers a front-row seat to this natural spectacle. This journey is an engineering marvel, taking you through over 90 tunnels and across nearly 2,000 bridges, making it a bucket-list trip for nature lovers and railway enthusiasts alike. Booking Your Mandovi Express Ticket
The Mandovi Express (10103 from Mumbai, 10104 from Madgaon) is a popular daily train, and tickets sell out fast, especially during the monsoon season. It's highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, as soon as the booking window opens—typically 120 days prior—on the IRCTC website or app. The train offers various classes, including AC First Class (1A), AC 2-Tier (2A), AC 3-Tier (3A), and Sleeper Class (SL). While AC coaches provide comfort, many seasoned travellers prefer the non-AC Sleeper Class for an unfiltered experience of the sights, sounds, and smells of the rainy Konkan. The large, open windows allow for unobstructed views and photography.
Choosing the Perfect Seat for the Best Views
This is perhaps the most crucial tip for a memorable journey. When travelling from Mumbai to Goa (Train No. 10103), the most spectacular views of valleys, rivers, and waterfalls are on the left side of the train. When booking, try to select a window seat on the left to ensure you don't miss any of the stunning scenery. For the return journey from Madgaon to Mumbai (Train No. 10104), the right side will offer the equivalent panoramic vistas. The morning departure from Mumbai ensures you travel through most of the scenic stretches in broad daylight, maximising your viewing pleasure.
What to Expect: Waterfalls and Landscapes
The Konkan route is famous for its numerous seasonal waterfalls that cascade down the Western Ghats, sometimes flowing right over the entrances of tunnels. While the famous Dudhsagar Falls is a spectacular sight, it's important to note that it is not directly visible from the Mandovi Express. Dudhsagar is located on the separate Madgaon-Belagavi rail route. However, the journey on the Mandovi Express is filled with its own breathtaking waterfalls, like the Ranpat waterfall near Ratnagiri, and countless smaller, unnamed streams that come alive only during the monsoon. You will pass over magnificent bridges, including the one across the Vashishti River, offering incredible views of the rain-swollen rivers below.
Onboard Experience and Travel Tips
The Mandovi Express is renowned for its onboard pantry car, which serves a wide variety of snacks and meals throughout the journey. However, it's always a good idea to carry some of your own snacks and sufficient water. A power bank for your devices is a must, as you'll likely be taking many photos and videos. Be aware that the Konkan Railway operates on a special monsoon timetable from June to October, with reduced speeds for safety, which can lead to delays. It is wise to check the live running status of your train on the day of travel. Pack a light raincoat or umbrella for when you disembark.
