For years, the universal advice for a healthy life included getting about eight hours of sleep. While duration is important, scientists are now discovering that other aspects of our sleep are even more critical. Emerging research shows that sleep regularity—going
to bed and waking up around the same time each day—is a powerful predictor of health. Studies using data from wearable devices have found that people with inconsistent sleep patterns have a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality, even more so than those who simply sleep for shorter durations. This shift in focus from quantity to quality and consistency is changing how we think about rest.
How Science Tracks Our Slumber
This new understanding is largely thanks to advances in sleep-tracking technology. While polysomnography (PSG), an in-lab study that measures brain waves, heart rate, and breathing, remains the 'gold standard', it's impractical for long-term study. The game-changer has been actigraphy. These wrist-worn devices, similar to popular fitness trackers, use accelerometers to monitor movement, providing researchers with longitudinal data on sleep-wake cycles in a person's natural environment. This allows for the collection of data over weeks or months, revealing patterns that a single night in a lab could never capture and linking them to real-world health records.
The Connection to Chronic Disease
The long-term data is painting a clear picture: poor and irregular sleep is linked to a host of chronic diseases. Insufficient or inconsistent sleep can disrupt metabolic health, increasing the risk for obesity and Type 2 diabetes by altering appetite-regulating hormones like ghrelin and leptin and impairing glucose regulation. Studies show that irregular sleep patterns are associated with a higher risk of hypertension and cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes. One decade-long study found that people with the most variable bedtimes had double the risk of a major cardiovascular event.
Sleep's Role in Brain Health
The links to brain health are particularly striking. During deep sleep, the brain's glymphatic system actively clears out metabolic waste, including amyloid proteins, which are linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Chronic sleep deprivation impairs this cleaning process. Research has connected poor sleep quality, including conditions like sleep apnea, with a higher risk for dementia. Less time in deep and REM sleep has been specifically associated with a greater likelihood of developing conditions like atrial fibrillation, while sleep irregularity is tied to major depressive disorder and anxiety.

The message from this research is empowering: sleep is a modifiable lifestyle factor that you can control. The key takeaway is to prioritise consistency. Try to establish a regular sleep-wake schedule, even on weekends, to support your body's natural circadian rhythm. Aiming for seven to nine hours is still a good guideline, but the quality and regularity of that sleep are just as important. Focusing on good sleep hygiene—creating a dark, cool, and quiet environment and avoiding screens before bed—can improve sleep quality. These consistent habits are not just about feeling rested tomorrow; they are an investment in preventing chronic disease and promoting a longer, healthier life.
