When a food product is found to be unsafe, the clock starts ticking. In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) oversees a structured recall process. A Food Business Operator (FBO) must notify authorities, often within 24 hours,
and immediately begin retrieving the affected products from distributors, retailers, and consumers. This process is a race against time to prevent public harm. However, the speed and accuracy of a recall depend entirely on one thing: traceability. Without a clear, detailed map of a product's journey, a recall can be slow, overly broad, and inefficient. Instead of surgically removing a single contaminated batch, companies are often forced to pull entire product lines, leading to massive financial losses and unnecessary food waste.
From 'What' to 'Where' and 'When'
The ability to reconstruct how a product was made is the core of modern food traceability. It’s the capacity to trace a product backward to its origins and track it forward to its final destination. This means knowing not just which ingredients are in a packet of biscuits, but which farm grew the wheat, which supplier provided the sugar, on what date it was processed, and which trucks delivered it to which stores. India's complex and often fragmented supply chains, with numerous small-scale players, make this a significant challenge. But it is a challenge that must be met. The FSSAI mandates traceability to ensure food safety, but a truly robust system goes beyond basic compliance. It builds a resilient food system capable of withstanding disruptions.
Beyond Safety: A Business Imperative
While protecting consumers is the primary driver, the business case for complete traceability is just as powerful. Companies with strong traceability systems can minimise the scope and cost of recalls, protecting their bottom line and brand reputation. In a crisis, being able to pinpoint the exact source of a problem quickly builds trust with both regulators and the public. Furthermore, detailed supply chain visibility allows for better inventory management, improved quality control, and stronger supplier relationships. Technologies like RFID tags, advanced barcode systems, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and blockchain are transforming supply chain management. IoT sensors can monitor temperature and humidity in real-time during transport, ensuring perishables remain fresh. Blockchain, with its immutable ledger, can create a secure and transparent record of every transaction from farm to shelf, combating food fraud and ensuring authenticity. While the initial investment in this technology can seem daunting, especially for smaller players, the long-term return on investment through increased efficiency, reduced waste, and enhanced brand equity is substantial.
Making Full Traceability the Standard
For the Indian food industry to embrace this future, several hurdles must be overcome. The cost and complexity of implementing new systems can be prohibitive, and a fragmented supply chain makes end-to-end integration difficult. However, the solution lies in a phased approach and industry-wide collaboration. Government and industry bodies can support smaller businesses with subsidies and shared technology platforms. Large manufacturers can lead the way by requiring higher standards from their suppliers, creating a ripple effect through the entire ecosystem.
