A Game-Changer for Connectivity
The launch of the Vande Bharat Express service to Srinagar marks the culmination of the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This 272-kilometre line provides a reliable, all-weather alternative to the often-treacherous NH-44,
connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India's rail network. The service has been met with overwhelming demand, with two trains already running at full capacity between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. In a testament to its success, a third Vande Bharat service for the route was recently approved in August 2026, which will also include a stop at Udhampur. For passengers, this means more options and greater accessibility to one of the country's most scenic destinations.
The Route and Reduced Travel Time
The journey from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar on the Vande Bharat Express is a significant time-saver. What was once an arduous 8-to-11-hour drive can now be completed in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The current route includes stops at key locations like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal before reaching Srinagar. The journey from Katra to Srinagar is even shorter, clocking in at just over three hours. The introduction of this service dramatically changes travel planning for tourists, pilgrims, and locals, making weekend trips and business travel more feasible than ever before.
A Journey Across Engineering Marvels
Passengers on this route are in for a visual treat, as the journey itself is an attraction. The train traverses some of the most challenging terrains in the world, crossing numerous tunnels and bridges. The two standout highlights are the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge. The Chenab Bridge is the world's highest railway bridge, soaring 359 metres above the riverbed—making it taller than the Eiffel Tower. Recent trials have seen the Vande Bharat cross this iconic structure at nearly 100 kmph. Shortly after, passengers will cross the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, an equally impressive feat of engineering. Large windows on the train are designed to offer panoramic views of these incredible structures and the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
Onboard Comfort and Special Features
The Vande Bharat trains running to Srinagar are not standard models; they have been specially designed for the region's climate. These 'winterized' trains are built to operate smoothly in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. They feature advanced heating systems to prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing. The driver's cabin is fitted with a heated windshield to prevent fogging and ensure clear visibility during cold weather and snowfall. Inside, passengers can expect the signature comfort of Vande Bharat trains, including fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic doors, comfortable seating with executive-class chairs that can rotate 180 degrees, and onboard catering services.
Impact on Tourism and Local Economy
The direct, all-weather rail link is poised to be a massive boon for Jammu and Kashmir's economy. The increased accessibility is expected to significantly boost tourism, making it easier for people from across the country to visit the valley throughout the year. The project has already made a substantial socio-economic contribution by generating employment. For travellers, the Vande Bharat service offers a safer, more comfortable, and highly predictable mode of transport. It eliminates the uncertainties of road travel due to weather or landslides, providing a reliable schedule that allows for better trip planning. This enhanced connectivity will support not only leisure tourism but also business and trade in the region.
