The Double-Edged Sword of Convenience
UPI AutoPay, introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2020, was designed to simplify life. It allows you to authorize recurring payments for everything from OTT subscriptions and mobile bills to loan EMIs and insurance premiums
with a one-time mandate. Once you approve a mandate with your UPI PIN, businesses can automatically debit your account on a set schedule. The convenience is clear: no more missed due dates or manual payment hassles. But this set-and-forget system has a downside. It’s easy to approve a mandate for a free trial or a new service and then completely forget about it, leading to what experts call 'subscription creep'.
The Hidden Costs of Forgotten Mandates
Small, recurring charges of ₹199 or ₹499 might seem insignificant on their own, but they add up. A forgotten gym membership, an unused streaming service, or an old app subscription can continue to charge you for months, quietly chipping away at your monthly savings. This becomes a blind spot in personal finance management. The danger isn't just about forgotten services. Sometimes, automatic debits can hit your account when the balance is low, potentially leading to failed payment fees or overdraft charges. Furthermore, just deleting a UPI app from your phone does not cancel the active mandate; the instruction remains active at the bank and NPCI level, meaning the debits can continue.
Your Action Plan: Conduct a Mandate Audit
Taking back control starts with a simple audit. You need to find out exactly which services have permission to debit your account. You can do this in two primary ways. The first is to check within each UPI app you use, like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. Each app has a dedicated section, usually called 'AutoPay', 'Mandates', or 'Automatic Payments', where you can see all the mandates you have set up through that specific app. However, this can be fragmented. For a complete picture, the most reliable method is to use the central portal provided by NPCI. By visiting the official UPI Help website (upihelp.npci.org.in), you can view all active and expired mandates linked to your mobile number across all apps and banks in one place.
How to Cancel or Modify Unwanted Mandates
Once you've identified an active mandate you no longer need, cancelling it is straightforward. Within your UPI app's AutoPay section or on the NPCI portal, you can select the specific mandate and choose to 'Cancel', 'Revoke', or 'Remove' it. You will likely need to enter your UPI PIN to confirm the cancellation. The cancellation is typically effective immediately, stopping any future debits from that merchant. Some apps also offer a 'Pause' option, which is useful if you want to temporarily suspend payments without cancelling the service entirely. Remember, you have the right to revoke authorization for any automatic payment at any time.
Best Practices for Financial Hygiene
To prevent your earnings from leaking out in the future, adopt a few simple habits. First, make it a monthly ritual to review your active mandates, just as you would review your bank statement. Set a calendar reminder for the first of each month to do a quick five-minute check. Before signing up for any new service, especially free trials, be conscious of whether you are approving a recurring mandate. Always read the terms carefully. For added security, a pre-debit notification is sent at least 24 hours before each payment is due, so keep an eye out for these alerts from your bank or UPI app. Don't ignore them. These notifications are your final checkpoint to ensure the debit is legitimate and expected. By staying vigilant, you can enjoy the convenience of AutoPay without compromising your financial control.
