The Challenge: Why Monsoon Magnifies Oiliness
The monsoon brings a refreshing break from the summer heat, but the accompanying spike in humidity can be tough on your skin. [4, 11] High humidity means sweat doesn't evaporate as quickly, trapping oil, dirt, and pollutants on your skin's surface. [20]
This environment is a perfect recipe for clogged pores, which can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts. [20, 11] Your sebaceous glands, which produce the skin's natural oil (sebum), may go into overdrive to compensate for the atmospheric moisture, making your face feel greasier than usual. [2, 13] The goal during this season isn't to strip the skin of all oil, but to manage the excess and maintain a healthy balance.
Hack 1: Switch to a Gel-Based Cleanser
The foundation of any good skincare routine is cleansing, and it's especially critical during the monsoon. Ditch heavy, creamy cleansers for a lightweight, gel-based or foaming formula. [5] Look for cleansers with ingredients like salicylic acid, which is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) that penetrates deep into pores to dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells. [6, 15] Tea tree oil is another excellent ingredient for its natural antibacterial properties that help prevent breakouts. [18] It's important not to over-wash your face, as this can strip the skin of its natural moisture, causing it to produce even more oil in response. [12, 18] Cleansing twice a day—once in the morning and once at night—is sufficient to keep your skin clean without causing irritation. [6]
Hack 2: Embrace a Lightweight, Oil-Free Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, especially in humid weather. The opposite is true. When your skin lacks hydration, it overproduces sebum to compensate. [25] Skipping moisturiser can therefore make your skin oilier. [5] The solution is to switch to a lightweight, water-based or gel-based moisturiser. [17, 25] Look for products labelled "non-comedogenic," which means they are formulated not to clog pores. [4, 5] Key ingredients to seek out are hyaluronic acid, which hydrates by attracting water to the skin, and niacinamide, which helps regulate oil production and improve the appearance of pores. [7, 8, 17]
Hack 3: Don't Skip the Sunscreen
Cloudy monsoon days can be deceptive. Harmful UVA and UVB rays can still penetrate the cloud cover and damage your skin. [2, 4] Sun protection is a non-negotiable step, year-round. For oily skin, the thought of layering a thick sunscreen can be off-putting. The key is to choose the right formula. Opt for a gel-based, matte-finish, or oil-free sunscreen with at least SPF 30. [4, 6] These modern formulations are lightweight, won't clog pores, and can actually help control shine throughout the day. [9, 19] Many even come with added skincare benefits, containing ingredients like niacinamide or hyaluronic acid. [16]
Hack 4: Reintroduce Traditional Wisdom with Clay Masks
Sometimes, the best hacks are the ones that have been passed down through generations. Clay masks are fantastic for oily skin, and Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth) is a timeless Indian favourite for a reason. [21] Multani Mitti is exceptionally absorbent, helping to draw out excess oil, dirt, and impurities from the pores. [27, 28, 29] Using a clay mask once or twice a week can significantly reduce surface oiliness, tighten pores, and leave your skin feeling fresh and clean. [3, 4] You can create a simple and effective mask by mixing Multani Mitti powder with rose water to form a paste. [22] This combination not only controls oil but also soothes the skin.
Hack 5: Go Minimal with Makeup
Heavy, full-coverage makeup can feel suffocating in humid weather and is more likely to clog pores. [5] The monsoon is the perfect time to adopt a more minimalist makeup routine. If you do wear makeup, look for products that are water-proof and non-comedogenic. [12] Consider swapping your heavy foundation for a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream. Using a mattifying primer can also make a huge difference, creating a smooth base and helping to control shine. [4] For on-the-go touch-ups, blotting papers are your best friend. They instantly absorb excess oil without disturbing your makeup. [5, 8]
