What is the Skandagiri Trek?
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is a prominent hill fortress located approximately 60-70 km from Bengaluru. Standing at an altitude of about 1,450 meters, it is one of the five major hills in the Chikkaballapur district and a highly popular
trekking destination. The trek is most famous for its sunrise views, which often feature a stunning blanket of clouds below the peak, creating a mystical, otherworldly experience. The trail, roughly 8 km long for a round trip, is considered moderately difficult, making it accessible for beginners with a decent fitness level as well as seasoned trekkers. The journey to the top takes about two to three hours, navigating rocky terrain and lush shrubbery.
A Glimpse into the Past
The summit of Skandagiri holds more than just incredible views; it is steeped in history. Here lie the ruins of a fort that was once a stronghold of Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore. He used the fort as a base in his fight against the British. After Tipu Sultan's defeat in the Anglo-Mysore War in 1791, the fort was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, trekkers can explore the remaining walls of the fortress, an old abandoned Shiva temple at the summit, and another temple at the base known as Papagni Mutt, adding a layer of historical exploration to the natural adventure.
How to Plan and Book Your Trek
To protect the environment and ensure safety, trekking at Skandagiri is regulated by the Karnataka Forest Department. It is mandatory to book your slot online through the official Karnataka Eco-Tourism website before you go. Unregistered trekkers will be denied entry at the forest checkpost near the base. There are different time slots available, with the most popular being the sunrise trek, which allows entry between 3:30 AM and 4:30 AM. These slots, especially on weekends, sell out fast, so it is advisable to book at least a week in advance. The fee is typically around ₹250 per person, and you will need to present your booking confirmation and a valid government-issued photo ID at the entrance.
The Journey to the Summit
The trek begins from the Papagni Temple in Kalwara village. For the sunrise trek, this means starting in the dark, guided only by the light of a torch or headlamp. The initial path is a relatively gentle climb but soon gives way to a rockier and steeper trail. The terrain can be slippery, especially during the monsoon season, so wearing trekking shoes with good grip is essential. The trail is well-trodden, and you'll likely be accompanied by other groups, but staying on the marked path is important for safety. The final stretch to the peak is the most challenging part of the ascent, but the rewarding views make every step worthwhile.
Essential Tips for a Great Experience
To make your Skandagiri trek safe and enjoyable, proper preparation is key. First, wear comfortable and sturdy trekking shoes with a solid grip. A headlamp or a good torch with extra batteries is non-negotiable for the sunrise trek. Carry at least two litres of water per person and some high-energy snacks, as there are no shops on the trail. Dress in layers; it can be chilly at the summit before the sun rises, even in warmer months. Always carry a valid ID proof that matches your booking. Finally, respect the environment by not littering and bringing all your waste back with you.
