Understanding the Visa Exemption
Good news for Indian passport holders: travelling to Thailand for a short tourist trip is straightforward. As of a notification effective September 15, 2026, Indian citizens can enter Thailand for tourism and stay for up to 30 days without needing to apply
for a visa beforehand. This visa exemption scheme means you can simply fly in, get your passport stamped on arrival, and begin your holiday. Previously, a more generous 60-day exemption was in place, but the current 30-day period is more than sufficient for the 6-day island getaway outlined here. Just be sure to have your return flight ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds for your stay, as immigration officials may ask to see them.
The ₹30,000 Budget: A Realistic Breakdown
Making a trip to Thailand for under ₹30,000 requires smart planning, but it is entirely achievable. The key is to allocate your funds wisely. Here’s a plausible budget breakdown per person: Flights (Round-trip): ₹13,000, Accommodation (5 nights in hostels): ₹4,000, Food (Street food and local eateries): ₹6,000, and Activities & Local Transport: ₹7,000. This totals ₹30,000. This budget is tight and depends heavily on booking flights well in advance and embracing a backpacker style of travel. It focuses on value, choosing affordable guesthouses and local experiences over luxury resorts and fine dining.
Flights and Accommodation: The Biggest Savings
Your flight will be the single largest expense. To stay within budget, you must book at least two to three months in advance. Flying from cities like Kolkata or Chennai often yields the cheapest fares to Bangkok or directly to Krabi (KBV). Once in Thailand, your home base will be Krabi, which is generally more budget-friendly than Phuket. Stay in the Ao Nang area for easy access to beaches and tour operators. Hostels are your best friend on this budget, with clean and safe dorm beds available for ₹600-₹800 per night. Hostels are also great places to meet fellow travellers and get local tips.
Your 6-Day Krabi Island Blueprint
Day 1: Arrival & Ao Nang Exploration. Arrive at Krabi Airport, take a shuttle bus to Ao Nang, and check into your hostel. Spend the afternoon exploring Ao Nang Beach and the vibrant streets filled with shops and cafes. For dinner, head to the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market for a delicious and cheap introduction to Thai street food. Day 2: The Famous Four Islands Tour. Book a 'Four Islands' tour by longtail boat, which is cheaper than a speedboat. These tours typically cost between 600-1,100 THB (₹1,500-₹2,750) and take you to Phra Nang Cave Beach, Tup Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island. Lunch and snorkelling gear are usually included. Day 3: Railay Beach Adventure. Railay Beach, accessible only by boat, is a must-visit. A longtail boat from Ao Nang costs around 100 THB each way. Spend the day swimming, sunbathing, and hiking to the stunning viewpoint for panoramic views of the peninsula. Day 4: Tiger Cave Temple & Krabi Town. Rent a scooter (around 200-250 THB/day) or take a local songthaew (shared taxi) to Wat Tham Suea, or Tiger Cave Temple. Climb the 1,237 steps to the top for a breathtaking vista. In the evening, explore Krabi Town’s weekend night market (if you're there Friday to Sunday). Day 5: Phi Phi Islands on a Budget. While a dedicated Phi Phi tour can be pricey, you can take the public ferry from Krabi's Klong Jilad Pier. This allows you to experience the main island, Phi Phi Don, without the cost of a full speedboat tour. Explore the viewpoints and enjoy the bustling atmosphere before taking the last ferry back. Day 6: Souvenirs and Departure. Enjoy a final Thai breakfast, do some last-minute souvenir shopping for friends and family, and then head back to Krabi Airport for your flight home.
Eating Well on a Shoestring
Thai street food is a budget traveller's dream – it's delicious, authentic, and incredibly affordable. A full meal from a street stall or at a night market, like Pad Thai or a bowl of noodle soup, will only set you back 50-80 THB (₹125-₹200). For a daily food budget of around ₹1,000, you can enjoy three full meals, plus snacks like fresh fruit smoothies and coconut ice cream. Avoid the tourist-trap restaurants along the main beach road in Ao Nang, where prices can be double or triple. Instead, eat where the locals eat in Krabi Town or at the various night markets for the best value and flavour.
