This Week's Rain Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a wet week for peninsular India as the northeast monsoon sets in. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, particularly on October 15. Other states
including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are also on alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds through October 20. The IMD predicts widespread showers for Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu from October 15 to 20. This wet spell is triggered by a cyclonic circulation and is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain across the entire South Peninsula. Residents are advised to stay updated with daily weather bulletins from official sources.
Treks and Hill Station Visits
Trekking and hiking during heavy monsoon showers can be extremely dangerous. The primary risks include slippery trails, reduced visibility, and the potential for flash floods and landslides. It is wise to postpone any plans for trekking in hilly areas, especially in regions under a heavy rainfall alert like parts of Kerala and the Western Ghats in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Before heading out, always check with local authorities about trail conditions and any active warnings. Many forest departments restrict access to vulnerable areas during the monsoon. If a trip is unavoidable, ensure you are with experienced guides who are aware of the local terrain and challenges. Opt for shorter, well-known trails and avoid camping near areas where water can stagnate or flood.
Coastal Outings and Beach Safety
Coastal areas in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are particularly vulnerable during the active monsoon. The IMD has warned of gusty winds, and rough sea conditions are common. All beach activities, including swimming and water sports, should be avoided. Strong currents and high tides can be deceptive and life-threatening. Fishermen are regularly issued warnings, and tourists should adhere to the same level of caution. Even a simple walk on the beach can be risky due to powerful waves. If you are staying in a coastal resort, pay close attention to local safety advisories and stay away from the water's edge.
Navigating The Urban Jungle
Heavy rains often lead to significant disruptions in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi. Waterlogging is a major concern, leading to severe traffic snarls. It is crucial to avoid driving or walking through flooded streets, as the water can conceal open manholes, potholes, or even downed power lines. When driving, reduce your speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and use your headlights for better visibility. Be extremely cautious around electrical poles and avoid touching wet switches or walls with leakages at home. Power cuts can also be frequent, so it is a good idea to keep your electronic devices charged.
Essential General Precautions
A few general safety measures can make a significant difference. Always keep an emergency kit ready with a flashlight, first-aid supplies, and drinking water. Protect your electronics using waterproof bags or cases. When you must go out, wear appropriate rain gear and sturdy, anti-slip footwear to prevent falls on slippery surfaces. The monsoon season also sees a rise in waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases. To stay healthy, avoid eating street food that may be contaminated, drink boiled or filtered water, and use insect repellent to protect against bites.
