Meet Dewi: Your New Digital Guide
The Embassy of India in Jakarta recently unveiled its new AI-powered virtual assistant, named Dewi. This digital persona is not just a chatbot; it's designed to be the friendly new face of the embassy's public outreach. The name 'Dewi' itself is a thoughtful
choice, resonating deeply in both India and Indonesia. It derives from the Sanskrit word 'Devi' (goddess) and is a common name in Indonesia with the same meaning, symbolizing a shared cultural heritage. The launch was intentionally timed to coincide with the auspicious occasions of Navaratri and Durga Puja, festivals celebrating the divine feminine, further cementing the avatar's culturally relevant identity. India's Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, highlighted that Dewi is here to 'guide her followers'.
Why a Virtual Avatar Was Needed
In an age of digital transformation, diplomatic missions are increasingly looking for ways to move beyond conventional communication methods. The introduction of Dewi is part of a strategic effort to make information about India 'more accessible, engaging and relevant' to audiences in Indonesia. This includes the significant Indian diaspora, which consists of approximately 1,30,000 Persons of Indian Origin and 15,000 Non-Resident Indians, many of whom are professionals. By creating a single, interactive source of information, the embassy aims to streamline communication and reduce the friction often associated with finding specific updates on consular services, cultural events, or business opportunities. This initiative is aligned with a broader push for using technology to improve public service delivery.
What Dewi Can Do For You
Dewi is designed to be a comprehensive information hub. Her primary function is to provide updates across several key areas. For the Indian community and those travelling, she will be a key source for consular updates, which can include information on passports, visas, and other essential services. Beyond consular matters, Dewi will also share information on Indian culture, travel and tourism, and educational opportunities like scholarships. Furthermore, she will serve as a point of information for business and investment prospects, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. The goal is for Dewi to operate across the embassy's social media platforms, bringing these diverse streams of information directly to the audience in an engaging format.
A Broader Push for Digital Diplomacy
The launch of Dewi in Jakarta is not an isolated event but part of a larger trend in India's diplomatic efforts. It reflects a growing emphasis on using digital tools to enhance outreach and citizen services globally. For instance, in August 2026, the Consulate General of India in Munich introduced a similar AI avatar named 'Sarathi' to assist with consular queries. These initiatives illustrate a forward-thinking approach to diplomacy, leveraging AI to build stronger connections with both the Indian diaspora and local populations. By adopting such technologies, Indian missions are making themselves more approachable and efficient, ensuring that vital information is never more than a few clicks away. This aligns with India's 'Act East' policy, which has seen relations with Indonesia rapidly develop in recent years.
