Meet Dewi: India's New Digital Diplomat
Dewi is an artificial intelligence-powered virtual avatar introduced by the Indian Embassy in Indonesia to serve as a new channel for public outreach. Unveiled in mid-October 2026, her role is to provide accessible information about India on a wide range
of topics. These include Indian culture, travel and tourism, scholarship opportunities, business and investment prospects, and important consular service updates. The initiative is designed to engage with Indonesians, the large Indian diaspora in the country, and anyone curious about India, making information more readily available through social media platforms. The embassy's announcement invited users to say 'Halo to Dewi' and stay connected, signalling a friendlier, more modern approach to diplomatic communication.
The Significance of a Name
The choice of the name 'Dewi' is deeply symbolic and culturally resonant for both India and Indonesia. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'Devi', meaning goddess, 'Dewi' is a common and cherished female name in Indonesia that carries the same divine connotation. This shared linguistic and cultural heritage highlights the centuries-old ties between the two nations. The launch was intentionally timed to coincide with the auspicious occasions of Navaratri and Durga Puja, Hindu festivals that celebrate the goddess. India's Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, noted that Dewi was introduced to 'guide her followers', reinforcing the avatar's role as a helpful and accessible source of information.
The Strategy Behind AI Diplomacy
The Dewi initiative is more than just a digital novelty; it's a strategic component of India's broader push towards integrating technology into governance and foreign policy. This move aligns with a vision to use AI for improving public service delivery and expanding outreach. By creating an AI persona, the embassy can disseminate information consistently and on a large scale, reaching audiences beyond traditional diplomatic events. The goal is to build a positive narrative and strengthen 'Brand India' on the global stage. This aligns with India's established national strategy on AI, which seeks to balance innovation with social welfare and promote technological inclusivity, positioning itself as a leader for the Global South.
A Growing Trend in Global Engagement
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has long been a pioneer in using digital tools for diplomacy, from its early adoption of Twitter for crisis communication to launching various mobile apps and online campaigns. The use of AI is the next logical step in this evolution. While Dewi is one of the first AI avatars to be used in this public-facing diplomatic capacity, the underlying principle of using technology to manage international relations is a global trend. AI is increasingly used for monitoring treaties, countering disinformation, and analysing political developments. Initiatives like Dewi demonstrate how nations are leveraging technology not just for high-level statecraft but also for soft power, cultural promotion, and direct engagement with the public.
Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
The introduction of an AI diplomat like Dewi opens up numerous opportunities. It can make embassy services more efficient and engaging, foster greater cultural understanding, and serve as a 24/7 information resource for a vast audience. However, the initiative is not without its challenges. The success of Dewi will depend on the sophistication of the AI engine supporting it. As some online commentators have pointed out, a poorly executed AI can lead to user frustration, defeating its purpose. Maintaining accuracy, ensuring the avatar is free from bias, and finding the right balance between automated responses and the irreplaceable human touch in diplomacy will be critical hurdles to navigate as this futuristic experiment unfolds.
