The Power and Peril of Percentages
Percentages are persuasive because they feel simple and universal. They help us make sense of change. Saying a product has "20% less sodium" is easier to grasp than saying it has "5 fewer milligrams." This is their strength. But it's also their weakness.
A percentage tells you the size of something relative to something else, but it doesn't tell you the size of the 'something else'. That hidden number—the denominator, or the 'base' from which the percentage is calculated—is where the mischief lies. Without it, a percentage is a number without context, and context is everything.
The Small Denominator Trap
Imagine a headline that screams, "Local startup's user base grows by 300% in one month!" It sounds incredibly impressive, suggesting explosive growth on par with a tech giant. But what if the company started with only two users? A 300% increase means they added six new users, bringing their total to eight. While good for them, it's hardly front-page news. This is the small denominator trap. A huge percentage increase on a tiny starting number results in a still-tiny final number. You see this in news reports about crime, too. A reported 200% increase in a specific crime in a neighbourhood sounds terrifying. But if the number of incidents went from one to three, the story changes dramatically. The percentage is technically correct, but deeply misleading.
The Shifting Base Game
Another common trick is to change the denominator mid-argument. Imagine a company gives its employees a 20% pay cut during a tough year. The next year, business improves, and they announce a "generous" 20% pay raise. It sounds like everything is back to normal, right? Not quite. The 20% cut was calculated on the original, higher salary. The 20% raise is calculated on the new, lower salary. If your original salary was ₹50,000, a 20% cut leaves you with ₹40,000. A 20% raise on that new salary is only ₹8,000, bringing you to ₹48,000 — still short of where you started. The percentage is the same, but the base number it applies to has shrunk, and so has your pay packet.
The 'Of What?' Question in Health and Sales
Advertisements and health news are notorious for this. A toothpaste ad might claim that "80% of dentists recommend this brand." Your brain assumes this means 80% of dentists prefer it over all others. But what if the survey allowed dentists to recommend multiple brands? Colgate famously used this tactic; their brand was one of several recommended, not the sole preference. Similarly, a new drug might be hailed for reducing a risk by 50%. But 50% of what? If the initial risk was extremely low, say 2 in 1,000 people, a 50% reduction means the risk is now 1 in 1,000. The relative change is huge, but the absolute change is tiny. The opposite is also true: a small percentage of a very large number is still a large number.
Your Self-Defence Kit: Three Questions to Ask
You don't need to be a mathematician to protect yourself from misleading stats. You just need to cultivate a healthy scepticism and ask a few simple questions. 1. A percentage of what? This is the most crucial question. Always seek the base number. If a report says profits are up 25%, ask, “Up from what?” 2. Is the base number large enough to be meaningful? A 50% success rate is impressive for a surgery performed thousands of times, but meaningless if it's based on two patients. Small sample sizes can produce dramatic percentages that aren't reliable. 3. Has the base number changed? When you see percentages used for comparisons over time (like pay raises or budget cuts), check if the denominator has stayed the same. If it hasn't, the comparison is likely flawed.
