Why You Should Check the Voter List Early
Having a Voter ID card, or EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card), is not enough to guarantee your right to vote. Your name must appear on the official electoral roll for your constituency. Names can sometimes be missing due to clerical errors, moving to a new
address, or revisions to the voter list. Verifying the registration status of every eligible family member well in advance provides ample time to make necessary additions or corrections. This simple check prevents disappointment and disenfranchisement at the polling station on election day. The Election Commission of India (ECI) provides robust online services to make this process seamless for every citizen.
Your Primary Tool: The ECI Voters' Service Portal
The official and most reliable place to check voter information is the ECI's Voters' Service Portal (voters.eci.gov.in). This web-based platform has replaced the older National Voters' Services Portal (NVSP) and serves as the central hub for all voter-related services. It is crucial to use this official ECI portal rather than relying on third-party websites, which may have outdated information or be used to harvest personal data. On the portal, you can search the electoral roll, apply for a new registration, request corrections, and even download a digital version of your Voter ID card (e-EPIC). To access most services, you will need to create a simple account using your mobile number.
How to Search by Personal Details
If you don't have a family member's EPIC number handy, you can search using their personal information. On the Voters' Service Portal, select the 'Search in Electoral Roll' option. Choose to 'Search by Details'. You will be prompted to enter information such as the person's name, their father's or husband's name, their age or date of birth, gender, state, district, and assembly constituency. Since names on the roll are often transliterated, spellings can vary. If a search is unsuccessful, try again with fewer fields or slight variations in spelling (e.g., 'Sanjay' instead of 'Sanjai'). A successful search will display the voter's details, including their polling station information.
The Easiest Method: Search by EPIC Number
The most straightforward way to find an entry is by using the EPIC number printed on the Voter ID card. This unique number provides an exact match, bypassing any potential issues with name spellings or other details. On the portal's search page, select the 'Search by EPIC' option. You will need to enter the family member's EPIC number, select their state from the dropdown menu, and fill in the captcha code for verification. Upon clicking 'Search', the system will retrieve the exact record from the electoral roll if it exists, confirming their registration and polling details.
Using the Voter Helpline Mobile App
For added convenience, the Election Commission offers the 'Voter Helpline' mobile app, available for both Android and iOS devices. This app provides many of the same functions as the web portal, allowing you to search the electoral roll, submit forms, and download a digital voter slip directly from your smartphone. You can search for family members using their details or EPIC number. The app is a comprehensive tool for engaging with voter services on the go and has become a popular resource for millions of citizens.
What to Do if a Name is Missing
If you search and find that an eligible family member's name is not on the list, you need to apply for a new registration. This is done by filling out Form 6. The form can be submitted online through the Voters' Service Portal or the Voter Helpline App. You will need to provide proof of age, identity, and residence. It is important to complete this process as soon as possible, as it takes time for the application to be verified and the name to be added to the roll. If the person has moved from a different constituency, Form 6 is also the correct application to use for registration at the new address.
How to Correct Errors in an Entry
If a name is on the list but contains errors—such as an incorrect spelling, age, or address—you can request a correction by submitting Form 8. This form is also available on the ECI portal and mobile app. When filling out Form 8, you will need to select the specific entry that requires correction and provide the accurate information, along with a supporting document. For example, to correct a name, you might upload a copy of a PAN card or Aadhaar card. For a change of address within the same constituency, you would use Form 8A. Once submitted, you can track the status of your application using the reference number provided.
