A Royal Festival in the Capital
The air at Delhi's Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium was recently thick with the sweet scent of success. From June 27th to 29th, the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026 celebrated the state's most delicious ambassador: the GI-tagged Queen Pineapple.
Timed to coincide with International Pineapple Day, the three-day event was a vibrant showcase designed to put the fruit on the national and global map. Inaugurated by state and central government dignitaries, the festival featured dozens of stalls, tasting sessions, and cultural performances, drawing in policymakers, exporters, and the public to get a proper introduction to Tripura's treasure. It marked the culmination of a concerted push to bring this regional delicacy from the hills of the Northeast to the country's capital.
What Makes the Queen So Special?
One bite is all it takes to understand the hype. The Queen Pineapple, which was declared Tripura's state fruit in 2018, is a world apart from the more common varieties. It is smaller and more compact, with a brilliant golden-yellow hue when ripe. But its real magic lies in its taste and texture. Known for its exceptional sweetness and a distinctive aroma, the flesh is remarkably juicy and tender with very little fibre, meaning it doesn't leave the sharp sensation sometimes associated with pineapples. Grown organically on the laterite soil of Tripura's hills, its unique qualities are a direct result of the region's specific climate. These characteristics earned it a coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag, legally recognizing it as a unique product of its origin.
From Tripura's Hills to Delhi's Tables
The journey for this royal fruit has been a long one, historically hampered by logistical challenges. For decades, poor connectivity and the lack of a robust cold chain infrastructure meant this perishable delicacy rarely made it far beyond local markets. However, recent years have seen a paradigm shift. The government launched the ambitious 'Mission Queen Pineapple', a ₹236 crore program aimed at developing a complete farm-to-market value chain. This mission focuses on everything from increasing cultivation area and establishing processing hubs to improving packaging and transport. By empowering Farmer Producer Organisations and creating better infrastructure, the state is finally overcoming the hurdles that kept the Queen Pineapple a regional secret for so long.
More Than Just a Fruit
For Tripura, the Queen Pineapple is not just an agricultural commodity; it's a symbol of identity and a powerful engine for economic hope. The state is a major pineapple producer, and this variety represents a significant opportunity for sustainable rural development. The crop is a vital source of livelihood for thousands of farmers, with 70-75% of growers belonging to tribal communities. The successful promotion in Delhi and beyond is set to have a transformative effect, with the government aiming to increase the pineapple economy from ₹35 crore to nearly ₹200 crore. This translates to better income and financial stability for the farmers who cultivate this fruit. The ambitions extend beyond fresh fruit to value-added products like juice, candies, and even vegan leather from its leaves, creating a holistic and sustainable industry.
