Why So Few Indians in the CPL?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a long-standing policy that prevents active Indian players, whether international or domestic, from participating in any overseas T20 franchise leagues. The primary goal is to protect the exclusivity
and brand value of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and ensure player availability for domestic competitions and national duty. To get a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to play abroad, a male player must have officially retired from all forms of Indian cricket, including the IPL. This is why the list of Indians who have appeared in the CPL is so small and features players who have already concluded their careers in India.
Pravin Tambe: The Trailblazer
In 2020, leg-spinner Pravin Tambe made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to play in the CPL. At the age of 48, he signed for the Trinbago Knight Riders, owned by the same group as his then-IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders. Tambe had been disqualified from the 2020 IPL for participating in an unsanctioned T10 league, which cleared the path for his CPL debut. He played a part in TKR's title-winning campaign, taking three wickets in the three matches he played, including a wicket in his very first over in the tournament.
Ambati Rayudu: The Short Stint
Following his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket after winning the 2023 IPL with Chennai Super Kings, Ambati Rayudu became the second Indian to feature in the CPL. He was signed as a marquee player by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots for the 2023 season. His time in the Caribbean was brief, however. After playing just three matches and scoring 47 runs, Rayudu pulled out of the tournament citing personal reasons and returned to India. His most notable contribution was a score of 32 against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
The U-19 Connection: Smit Patel and Sunny Sohal
Two former India U-19 players have also graced the CPL after formally ending their Indian cricket careers to pursue opportunities in the United States. Wicketkeeper-batsman Smit Patel, a member of the 2012 U-19 World Cup-winning squad, played for the Barbados Royals in 2021. He scored 70 runs in five matches, including a half-century on his debut. Before him, Sunny Sohal, another former India U-19 player who had also featured in the IPL, played for the Barbados Tridents in 2018. However, it's worth noting he was selected as a US national at the time.
Shreyanka Patil: A Pioneer in the Women's CPL
While the men's list is short, the women's game has its own Indian pioneer. In 2023, all-rounder Shreyanka Patil became the first Indian woman to play in the Women's CPL (WCPL). She was signed by the Guyana Amazon Warriors and had a sensational tournament. Patil emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the season, claiming nine wickets in just five matches and playing a crucial role for her team.
