Once imported crude oil lands in India, it is sent to refineries to be processed into petrol and diesel. However, the price of crude oil is just one part of the final retail price. The central and state governments levy significant taxes, including excise duty and Value Added Tax (VAT), which can constitute more than half of what you pay at the pump. This is why, even when global crude prices fall, consumers may not see an immediate or proportional drop in fuel prices, as tax structures and other costs play a major role.
The Transportation Toll: The Diesel Connection
Here’s where the price shock starts its journey towards your kitchen. In India, the vast majority of goods are transported by road, and the backbone of this logistics network is diesel. Trucks that carry everything from fresh vegetables and grains to packaged goods run on diesel. Fuel constitutes a significant portion—up to 45%—of the operating cost for a logistics company. When diesel prices rise, transporters pass on this increased cost to manufacturers and distributors, often through a 'fuel surcharge'. This makes moving any physical product across the country more expensive.

The impact of diesel prices isn't limited to just trucks on the highway. In the agricultural sector, diesel powers tractors for ploughing, water pumps for irrigation, and harvesters during harvest season. An increase in diesel prices directly raises the input costs for farmers. Similarly, many manufacturing plants and small-scale industries use diesel for generators and machinery. Petroleum by-products are also crucial for manufacturing items like plastics, chemicals, and packaging materials. Higher energy and raw material costs lead to a higher cost of production for almost every consumer good.
The Final Mile: From the Shop to Your Bill
By the time produce from a farm or a product from a factory reaches your local kirana store or supermarket, it has accumulated costs at every stage of its journey. The farmer faced higher input costs, the manufacturer paid more for production and packaging, and the distributor paid higher freight charges. Retailers, facing higher wholesale prices, have little choice but to pass these accumulated costs on to the end consumer to protect their own slim margins. This is how a spike in global crude oil, thousands of miles away, quietly adds to the price of your dal, vegetables, milk, and other daily necessities.
