A New Frontier: From Launch to Orbit
For decades, the Indian space story was synonymous with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Today, that story has a new and rapidly growing cast of characters: private startups. Spurred by landmark government reforms and a surge in investor
confidence, these companies are moving up the value chain. While launch providers like Skyroot and Agnikul captured early headlines, the current wave of innovation is focused on designing, building, and operating satellites. This marks a strategic pivot from being users of space technology to becoming creators of space assets, particularly in the lucrative field of Earth Observation (EO). These companies are building the infrastructure that will power a new data-driven economy from low Earth orbit.
The Hyperspectral Revolution
Leading the charge is Pixxel, a startup building a constellation of the world's highest-resolution hyperspectral satellites. Unlike traditional satellites that see the world in a few colours, hyperspectral imaging captures data across hundreds of spectral bands. This allows for the detection of subtle chemical and physical properties on the Earth's surface that are invisible to the naked eye. After successfully launching its initial 'Firefly' constellation, Pixxel is now developing its next-generation 'Honeybee' satellites. These will feature even more advanced capabilities, including shortwave infrared (SWIR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to see through clouds. The goal is to provide unprecedented insights for agriculture, climate monitoring, urban planning, and resource management. With a recent $100 million funding round, Pixxel is well-capitalized to expand its fleet and its AI-powered analytics platform, Aurora.
All-Weather Vision with SAR
Another key player, GalaxEye Space, is pioneering a different approach. The Bengaluru-based startup made headlines by launching 'Mission Drishti', the world's first satellite to feature a combined Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical sensor system. This innovative fusion allows the satellite to capture high-resolution images day or night and, crucially, through cloud cover, a major limitation for purely optical systems. This all-weather, all-time capability is a game-changer for applications requiring persistent monitoring, such as disaster management, maritime surveillance, infrastructure tracking, and national security. The successful launch of Mission Drishti, the largest private EO satellite built in India, demonstrates the sector's growing technical prowess.
Building the Full Stack
Beyond just the satellites themselves, startups like Dhruva Space are building the essential 'picks and shovels' for the space economy. The Hyderabad-based company provides end-to-end solutions, from satellite platforms and solar arrays to satellite deployers that have been successfully tested on ISRO's PSLV missions. Dhruva Space has become a key partner for both domestic and international clients, offering hosted payload services that allow other companies to get their technology into orbit without having to build a full satellite themselves. The company's work with deployers and its successful launch of its own satellites showcase a move towards integrated solutions, reflecting the maturity of the Indian space startup ecosystem.
The Government as an Accelerator
This boom would be impossible without a fundamental shift in government policy. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has been a critical catalyst. Acting as a single-window agency, IN-SPACe facilitates access to ISRO's world-class testing facilities, expertise, and launch infrastructure, which was previously inaccessible to private players. This dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for capital-intensive space hardware development. Furthermore, through NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO is actively transferring technology to the private sector, helping startups accelerate their development timelines and build on decades of public research. Policies like the Technology Adoption Fund (TAF) also provide direct financial support to help startups turn prototypes into commercially viable products.
