Tax Audit Report Filing
For businesses and professionals who are required to have their accounts audited, September 30, 2026, is a critical deadline. This is the last day to file the tax audit report for the financial year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27). A tax audit is an examination
of a taxpayer's accounts by a chartered accountant to ensure compliance with India's income tax laws. This deadline applies to taxpayers whose turnover or gross receipts exceed a specified threshold. It is important to note that this is the deadline for filing the audit report itself, not the income tax return, for which the due date is typically October 31 for audit cases. As of late September, while many professional bodies have requested an extension, the government has not announced one, making the September 30 deadline binding.
Last Chance for September NFOs
The end of the month also marks the closing date for several New Fund Offers (NFOs). An NFO is the first-time subscription offer for a new scheme launched by an asset management company. Several mutual funds have launched NFOs that are set to close in the final days of September. For instance, the Invesco India Nifty Chemical Index Fund, Invesco India Nifty India Defence Index Fund, and Kotak Nifty Capital Markets Index Fund are all scheduled to close for subscription on September 29, 2026. Another one to note is the SBI Nifty200 Value 30 ETF FOF, which closes on September 30, 2026. Investors looking to get in on these new schemes at their initial offer price of Rs 10 per unit should complete their investments before these dates.
Demat and Mutual Fund Nomination
While not a hard deadline for existing account holders, new rules for demat and mutual fund accounts came into effect on September 1, 2026, making this a good time for a financial check-up. Under the new SEBI framework, anyone opening a new single-holder demat account or mutual fund folio must either add a nominee or formally opt out. For existing accounts, there is no threat of an account freeze for not having a nominee. However, you will receive regular reminders from your broker or fund house until you update it. Given the simplified online process, the end of the month is an excellent opportunity to add a nominee to your older accounts, ensuring a smoother transfer of assets to your heirs.
Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Companies
For private and public limited companies in India, September 30 is the statutory deadline to hold their Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the financial year that ended on March 31, 2026. The AGM is a mandatory yearly gathering of a company's shareholders and directors to discuss the company's financial performance and other key business matters. The clock for filing other important documents with the Registrar of Companies (ROC), such as financial statements (Form AOC-4) and the annual return (Form MGT-7), starts from the date of the AGM. Therefore, holding the AGM by the September 30 deadline is a crucial compliance step for all eligible companies.
