Mumbai to Goa: The Konkan Railway
Often hailed as India's most cinematic monsoon route, the Konkan Railway is an engineering marvel that truly comes alive in the rains. The journey from Mumbai to Goa takes you through the heart of the Western Ghats, across nearly 2,000 bridges and through 92
tunnels. From your window, you'll witness a panorama of emerald-green valleys, swollen rivers, and countless waterfalls cascading down cliffs, sometimes just metres from the tracks. During peak monsoon, clouds often hang at window level, creating a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. The route offers breathtaking views of the coastline and charming villages, making it a bucket-list journey for photographers and nature lovers. For the best views of the waterfalls, try to secure a seat on the left side when travelling from Mumbai.
Kalka to Shimla: Himalayan Queen
A journey on the Kalka-Shimla Railway is like travelling back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage toy train has been chugging along its narrow-gauge track since 1903, navigating a winding 96-kilometre route. The five-hour trip takes you through 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges, offering stunning views of the Himalayan foothills. During the monsoon, the pine and oak forests are shrouded in a romantic mist, and the valleys turn a brilliant shade of green. While the weather can sometimes cause delays, the atmospheric journey through foggy landscapes and rain-washed cedar forests offers a unique and moody mountain vibe that is truly unforgettable.
Mettupalayam to Ooty: Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway offers one of South India’s most enchanting journeys. This vintage toy train travels from the foothills at Mettupalayam to the popular hill station of Ooty, covering 46 kilometres of incredibly steep terrain. The five-hour ride is a feast for the senses, passing through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around 208 sharp curves. In the monsoon, the journey is particularly special. You will pass by dense eucalyptus forests, rolling tea gardens drenched in rain, and misty valleys. The unhurried pace of the train allows you to fully soak in the panoramic views of the Nilgiri Hills, making the journey itself the destination.
Matheran Hill Railway: A Forest Escape
For a truly unique experience, the Matheran Hill Railway offers a slow, peaceful journey into Asia's only vehicle-free hill station. This narrow-gauge toy train winds its way through the dense, rain-soaked forests of the Western Ghats. The route from Neral to Matheran is known for its sharp, winding curves that offer spectacular valley views. While the full service can sometimes be suspended during heavy rains, a shorter service often runs between Aman Lodge and Matheran station. The monsoon transforms Matheran into a misty paradise, with clouds descending upon the hills and small waterfalls appearing along the tracks, providing a serene escape from the hustle of city life.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: The Iconic Toy Train
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the 'Toy Train', is one of India's most iconic mountain railways and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the full line from New Jalpaiguri can be prone to landslide-related disruptions during the monsoon, the shorter 'Joy Ride' from Darjeeling to Ghum and back typically remains operational. This section includes the famous Batasia Loop, which provides a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding hills. In the monsoon, Darjeeling is enveloped in mist, and the lush tea gardens that carpet the hillsides become exceptionally vibrant. Riding this historic steam train through the fog-kissed landscape is a magical experience that captures the timeless charm of the region.
