The Post-Monsoon Vegetable Bounty
As the heavy rains recede, the markets begin to overflow with a mix of late monsoon and early winter vegetables. October is a prime month for produce that thrives in cooler, clearer weather. This is the time to enjoy vegetables that are at their peak
in terms of flavour, texture, and nutritional value. Eating seasonally ensures your meals are not only tastier but also more affordable and beneficial for your health, preparing your body for the coming winter. The lower humidity and milder temperatures are ideal for a variety of greens and root vegetables to flourish.
Essential Leafy Greens
October is a fantastic month for leafy greens, which are packed with essential nutrients. Look for fresh spinach (palak), which is perfect for dal, saag, and parathas. Fenugreek leaves (methi) also start to appear, offering a slightly bitter, aromatic flavour ideal for theplas or pairing with potatoes. Another green to add to your list is amaranth (chaulai or keerai), a nutrient-dense leaf that's great in simple stir-fries or lentil dishes. When buying, choose greens with vibrant, unwilted leaves and firm stems.
Hearty Root Vegetables
The cooling soil of October yields a wonderful harvest of root vegetables. Carrots (gajar) are particularly sweet and juicy this month, perfect for salads, soups, or the first gajar ka halwa of the season. Radishes (mooli) are crisp and peppery, excellent for pickles, salads, or stuffed into parathas. Sweet potatoes (shakarkandi) also come into their own, offering a nutritious and versatile ingredient for everything from savoury chaat to simple roasted snacks. Beetroot is another star, great for shorbas, salads, or adding colour to any dish.
Cruciferous Comforts
Cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower (phool gobi) and cabbage (patta gobi) are at their best in autumn. The cooler weather gives them a sweeter taste and a denser texture. Cauliflower is incredibly versatile, starring in classics like Aloo Gobi or roasted whole for a modern twist. Cabbage is perfect for slaws, stir-fries, or the comforting vegetarian dish of Cabbage Rolls. These vegetables are known for their health benefits and are a great way to add substance and nutrition to your meals.
October's Fruit Basket
The fruit selection in October is a delightful mix. Custard apple (sitaphal) is a seasonal highlight, with its creamy, sweet pulp that makes for a delicious dessert on its own or in dishes like mousse or kheer. Guavas (amrood) also start to arrive, packed with vitamin C and perfect for a mid-day snack with a sprinkle of salt and chilli. You can also find an abundance of pomegranates (anaar), whose jewel-like seeds are perfect for garnishing salads, raitas, and rice dishes. Pears and figs are other excellent choices available during this period.
Herbs and Spices for the Season
The transition in seasons is a good time to stock up on immunity-boosting herbs and spices. Fresh ginger and turmeric are widely available and are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, making them perfect additions to teas, curries, and dals. Early green garlic also makes an appearance in some markets, offering a milder flavour than its dry counterpart. As the festive season, including Dussehra and the lead-up to Diwali, often falls in October, it's also a great time to check your stock of whole spices like cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon for preparing festive sweets and savouries.
