A Major Boost in Speed and Capacity
The most significant upgrade is the website's sheer power. The new platform can now process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a massive jump from the previous capacity of around 32,000. This means the website is far more stable and less likely
to crash, especially during high-traffic periods like the Tatkal booking window. The system for handling enquiries has also been dramatically improved, now capable of managing over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, up from 4 lakh. This translates to faster PNR status checks and seat availability searches for everyone.
A Cleaner, Clutter-Free Interface
One of the most welcome changes is the cleaner and more intuitive design. The new interface does away with many of the elements that previously frustrated users, such as unnecessary pop-ups and distracting flashing graphics. Crucially, the system has reduced the reliance on CAPTCHA verifications, which often interrupted and slowed down the booking process. This streamlined approach is designed to make navigating the site and completing a booking a much faster and less frustrating experience, particularly for Tatkal tickets.
All Seat Availability on a Single Screen
Gone are the days of toggling between different travel classes to find a seat. The updated website now displays seat availability across all classes—from Sleeper to various AC tiers—on one single, consolidated screen. This small but powerful change allows passengers to quickly compare all available options and prices without having to repeatedly search and click through different pages, saving valuable time during the booking process.
New Tools for Smarter Planning
The revamped website introduces two key features that have long been standard on airline booking portals. First is a fare calendar, which allows travellers with flexible dates to easily compare ticket prices across a range of days to find the most economical option. Second, passengers can now submit their preferred seat choices, like window or aisle, during the booking process instead of being assigned one at random.
Simplified Payments and Repeat Bookings
The checkout process has been made quicker with fewer steps required to complete a transaction. The integration of payment options like IRCTC-iPay and UPI is more seamless, aiming to reduce the rate of transaction failures. For frequent travellers, the ability to save passenger details is a significant time-saver, eliminating the need to manually enter names and information for every new booking.
Greater Accessibility for All Passengers
In a move to make the platform more inclusive, the new IRCTC website offers support for multiple Indian languages. This makes the booking process more accessible to users across the country who may not be comfortable with English. Furthermore, the system has integrated booking facilities for Divyangjan, students, and patients onto the main platform, simplifying the process for those applying for concessions.
