The Glass-Domed Vistadome Experience
The star of this trending journey is the Vistadome coach attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger train. Inaugurated in 2017, this specially designed carriage redefines scenic train travel. It features massive glass windows, a transparent glass roof,
and seats that can rotate 360 degrees, offering passengers an uninterrupted panoramic view of the Eastern Ghats. This immersive design allows travellers to feel completely enveloped by the landscape, whether it's the sudden darkness of a tunnel or the expansive view from a high bridge. The coach is air-conditioned and includes an observation lounge, providing a comfortable and luxurious way to witness the region's raw beauty.
A Monsoon Symphony in Green
The route from Visakhapatnam to Araku becomes particularly magical during the rainy season, from June to September. The landscape transforms into a vibrant canvas of lush greenery. The journey, which takes approximately four hours, winds through numerous tunnels and over countless bridges, each offering a dramatic reveal of the valleys below. For nature lovers, the monsoon is arguably the best time to take this trip, as the hills come alive with seasonal waterfalls and mist-covered peaks. Key sights include the dramatic bridges that span deep gorges and the Ananthagiri hills, where the train climbs through verdant coffee plantations. This spectacular scenery, best viewed from the Vistadome coach, turns the ride into a moving picture of nature in its prime.
Why is This Journey Trending Now?
The growing popularity of the Araku Vistadome trip, especially during the monsoon, reflects a broader shift towards experiential and domestic travel. For many, the journey is more important than the destination. The Vistadome coach, perfect for capturing stunning photos and videos, has become a social media sensation, further fuelling its popularity. Travellers from nearby cities like Hyderabad and across South India are increasingly seeking out this unique weekend getaway. While winter (November to February) has traditionally been the peak season for its clear skies, the monsoon offers a different, more dramatic kind of beauty that appeals to photographers and nature enthusiasts.
How to Plan Your Vistadome Trip
Booking a seat on the Vistadome coach requires some advance planning, as they sell out quickly. Tickets can be booked on the IRCTC website or app. The coach is designated as 'EV' (Executive Vistadome) or 'Executive Chair Car' (ECC) on Train No. 18551, which departs from Visakhapatnam (VSKP) around 6:45 AM and reaches Araku (ARK) by 11:00 AM. The fare for the Vistadome coach is typically between ₹600 and ₹800 per person. Given the high demand, it is advisable to book your tickets several weeks, or even months, in advance, as reservations open 120 days before the travel date.
Exploring Araku Valley
While the train journey is a highlight, Araku Valley itself offers plenty to explore. Upon arrival, visitors can delve into the local culture at the Tribal Museum or learn about the region's famous produce at the Coffee Museum. The stunning Borra Caves, a geological marvel of stalactite and stalagmite formations, are a must-visit and are located near a station on the same rail route. Other attractions include the Padmapuram Gardens and several picturesque waterfalls like Katiki and Thatiguda, which are particularly impressive during the monsoon. For a complete experience, many tourists opt to take the train to Araku and return by road to enjoy different perspectives of the ghats.
