What is the Bharatiya Antariksha Station?
The Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS) is India’s answer to having a permanent, sovereign outpost in Low Earth Orbit. Envisioned by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), this will be a modular space station assembled in orbit, much like the International
Space Station (ISS). Plans indicate it will orbit at an altitude of about 400-450 kilometres above Earth. Once complete, it will serve as a home and workplace for three to four astronauts, who will be able to conduct missions lasting from three to six months. This marks a monumental step up from short-duration flights, allowing for sustained human presence and long-term research in space under the Indian flag. By building its own station, India will join an exclusive club of nations—after the US/Russia and China—that have operated such a facility.
The Building Blocks: Technology and Timeline
The journey to constructing the BAS is a phased one, with major milestones planned over the next decade. The first module, a foundational piece, is targeted for launch in 2028 aboard one of ISRO's LVM3 rockets. The entire five-module station, weighing approximately 52 tonnes, is expected to be fully assembled and operational by 2035. The station will consist of several key parts, including a base module, a core docking module, and dedicated science and laboratory modules. A critical piece of the puzzle is the Gaganyaan mission, India's human spaceflight program. Gaganyaan is the essential precursor, developing and proving the technologies needed to safely transport astronauts to and from the station. This includes the human-rated launch vehicle, life support systems, and crucial rendezvous and docking technologies, which ISRO has been successfully testing. Essentially, Gaganyaan provides the taxi service, while the BAS will be the destination.
A Laboratory in the Sky: Scientific Goals
The primary purpose of the Bharatiya Antariksha Station is science. It will be a state-of-the-art laboratory for conducting experiments that are impossible to perform on Earth due to gravity. A key focus will be microgravity research. Scientists will study how the near-weightless environment affects human biology, which is vital for planning longer and more distant space missions. This research could lead to breakthroughs in medicine, helping us better understand conditions like muscle atrophy and bone density loss. Beyond human biology, the station will be a platform for materials science, where unique alloys and crystals can be manufactured in space. It will also enhance India's Earth observation capabilities for disaster management and climate monitoring and provide a testbed for new technologies developed by Indian startups and researchers.

It is an integral part of the 'Space Vision 2047', a long-term roadmap for the nation's space program. Gaining experience in long-duration spaceflight through the BAS is essential for achieving the next ambitious goal: landing an Indian astronaut on the Moon by 2040. The station will serve as the perfect training ground, allowing ISRO to master the complex life support, health monitoring, and operational challenges of keeping humans healthy and productive in space for extended periods. It represents a strategic investment in capability, moving India from being able to fly short missions to sustaining a long-term human presence in orbit, a prerequisite for any future deep-space exploration, including missions to Mars.
