The 'Real Feel' Deception
The number on a thermometer shows the air temperature, but it doesn't tell the full story of how that temperature feels to a person. Meteorologists use a measurement called the 'heat index', also known as the 'apparent temperature' or 'real feel'. This
value combines the air temperature with relative humidity to give a more accurate idea of how hot it actually feels. For example, an air temperature of 32°C with 70% humidity can feel like a staggering 41°C. This is why a seemingly mild monsoon day can feel more oppressive than a much hotter day during the dry season.
Your Body’s Natural Air Conditioner
To understand why humidity has such a dramatic effect, we first need to look at the human body's primary cooling system: sweating. When your internal temperature rises, a small region in your brain called the hypothalamus signals sweat glands all over your body to get to work. As this sweat, which is mostly water, reaches your skin, it evaporates. This process of evaporation requires energy, which it takes from your body in the form of heat. As the liquid turns to vapour, it carries that heat away, effectively cooling you down. It's an incredibly efficient, built-in air conditioning system designed to keep your body from overheating.
How Humidity Sabotages the System
This brilliant natural process has an Achilles' heel: it relies on the air's capacity to absorb more moisture. During the monsoon, the air is already saturated with water vapour—this is what we call high humidity. When the air is already full of moisture, your sweat has nowhere to go. Evaporation slows down dramatically or, in cases of 100% humidity, stops altogether. Instead of evaporating and cooling you, the sweat just sits on your skin or drips off, leaving you feeling sticky and hot. Your body's cooling mechanism is effectively disabled, causing your core temperature to rise and making you feel much hotter than the actual air temperature.
More Than Just Discomfort
This struggle to cool down is more than just uncomfortable; it poses significant health risks. When your body can't shed heat effectively, it works harder, putting a strain on your heart and other organs. This increases the risk of dehydration, as your body continues to produce sweat in a futile attempt to cool down, leading to a loss of fluids and electrolytes. This can quickly progress to more serious conditions like heat exhaustion, characterized by nausea, dizziness, and muscle cramps, or even heatstroke—a medical emergency where the body's temperature reaches dangerous levels.
Tips for Beating the Humid Heat
Since you can't change the weather, the key is to help your body cope. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials allow for better air circulation and don't trap heat. Stick to lighter colours that reflect sunlight rather than absorb it. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon. If possible, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, typically between noon and 4 p.m. At home, ensure good ventilation. Unlike an AC, an air cooler works best with open windows to create cross-ventilation, which helps push the humid air out. Using fans can also help circulate air and aid the little evaporation that is possible.
