The primary issue with high humidity is its effect on your body's natural cooling system. To prepare for and maintain sleep, your body's core temperature needs to drop slightly. A key way the body achieves this is through sweating. As sweat evaporates
from your skin, it releases heat and cools you down. However, when the air is already saturated with moisture—as it is during the Indian monsoon—sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. This traps heat, leaving you feeling warm, sticky, and uncomfortable, making it significantly harder for your body to reach the cooler temperature required for deep sleep.
How Humidity Hijacks Your Sleep
This struggle to regulate temperature has a direct impact on your sleep architecture. Studies show that high humidity can increase wakefulness and reduce the time spent in the most critical stages of sleep: slow-wave deep sleep and REM sleep. Deep sleep is essential for physical recovery, including tissue repair and immune system support, while REM sleep is vital for memory consolidation and cognitive function. By robbing you of these crucial phases, a humid environment means you might wake up feeling groggy and unrefreshed, even if you were in bed for a full eight hours. Furthermore, damp conditions are breeding grounds for allergens like mould and dust mites, which can trigger allergies, stuffy sinuses, and respiratory irritation, further disturbing your rest.

The simplest and most immediate solution is to get the air moving. Stagnant, humid air is the enemy of good sleep. Using a ceiling or standing fan is crucial for promoting circulation. For an enhanced cooling effect, you can place a bowl of ice in front of a table fan; the breeze will circulate cooler air through the room. While it might seem counterintuitive, opening windows during cooler parts of the day, like early mornings or late evenings, can help ventilate the space and flush out stale, damp air. During the hot and humid peaks of the day, it's better to keep windows and curtains closed to block out the heat.
Choose Breathable Bedding
The fabrics you sleep on and in can make a world of difference. Heavy, synthetic fabrics like polyester or satin trap heat and moisture. Instead, opt for lightweight, breathable materials. Sheets made from 100% cotton or linen are excellent choices as they absorb moisture and allow for better airflow, keeping you drier and cooler throughout the night. Consider using a waterproof but breathable mattress protector to prevent dampness from seeping into your mattress, which can become a hotspot for mildew. A light blanket or just a cotton top-sheet might be all you need for covering.
Low-Cost Dehumidifying Hacks
While an electric dehumidifier is the most effective tool, there are several low-cost ways to absorb excess moisture from your bedroom. Placing open bowls of rock salt or baking soda in the corners of your room can help draw humidity out of the air. Activated charcoal is another excellent natural dehumidifier that also helps combat the musty odours common during the monsoon. Though not as powerful as a dedicated device, these natural solutions can make a noticeable difference in smaller spaces. Additionally, taking shorter, cooler showers before bed can help prevent adding extra steam and humidity to your home's environment.
When to Use an AC or Dehumidifier
If high humidity is a persistent problem, investing in an air conditioner or a dehumidifier may be necessary. An air conditioner cools the air and removes moisture as part of its function. A dedicated dehumidifier is designed specifically to pull water from the air, and many find running one for a few hours before bedtime makes the room significantly more comfortable. Experts agree that maintaining an indoor humidity level between 40% and 50% is ideal for sleep. This range is low enough to allow your body to cool itself effectively but not so low that it causes dry skin or throat irritation.
