What Exactly Is a Vistadome Coach?
Imagine travelling on a train where the walls feel like they've disappeared, replaced by massive glass windows and a transparent roof. That's the Vistadome experience. These specially designed coaches, made by Indian Railways, are built for sightseeing.
Key features include oversized glass windows, see-through glass roof panels, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing passengers to face the direction of the best views without leaving their seats. The goal is to provide an immersive travel experience, turning the journey itself into the main attraction. These coaches also often come equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, GPS-based information systems, and an observation lounge for an uninterrupted view of the landscape. They have been successfully deployed on several scenic routes across India, including the Araku Valley, Kashmir Valley, and various Himalayan 'toy train' lines.
The Scenic Route: Madurai to Guruvayur
Instead of the frequently discussed Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Southern Railway has chosen the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327/16328) for this debut. The decision is strategic, as this route offers passengers a spectacular journey through the Western Ghats. A major highlight is the picturesque ghat section between Sengottai in Tamil Nadu and Punalur in Kerala. Passengers will be treated to views of lush green landscapes, rolling hills, and the stunning natural beauty of the Sengottai gap, which connects the two states. This route connects two major temple cities, Madurai and Guruvayur, making it a popular path for both pilgrims and tourists. The addition of the Vistadome coach is expected to transform this journey into a premier tourist experience.
Details of the Trial Run
The trial period for the new Vistadome coach begins today, October 22, 2026, and is scheduled to run until January 15, 2027. This initial phase has been timed to coincide with the peak tourist season, favourable weather, and festive holidays to accurately gauge passenger demand and operational smoothness. The Vistadome coach will not be available every day. From Madurai, it will be attached to the express train on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For the return journey from Guruvayur, it will be available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This limited schedule allows the railway to test the waters before committing to a permanent service. Officials confirmed that advance reservations for this Executive Chair Car (EC) category coach are already open.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
The introduction of the Vistadome coach is being hailed as a significant milestone for tourism in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By enhancing the travel experience, Southern Railway aims to attract more leisure travellers to the region. The unique panoramic views offered by the coach are expected to make the train journey a must-do activity in itself, similar to famous scenic railways around the world. Rail user associations have praised the move, noting its potential to draw in more tourists who want to enjoy the natural splendour of the Western Ghats. The success of this trial could pave the way for more Vistadome coaches on other scenic routes in the state, including the world-famous Nilgiri Mountain Railway, where redesigned coaches have also recently undergone trials.
How to Book and What to Expect
Booking a seat in the new Vistadome coach is done through the standard IRCTC portal. However, passengers won't find a separate 'Vistadome' category. Instead, they need to look for 'Executive Chair Car (EC)' when booking the Madurai-Guruvayur Express on the specified days of operation. The fare structure includes a basic fare of Rs 515, with the cost for the entire journey from Madurai to Guruvayur being around Rs 1,875. Given the unique nature of the coach and the high demand for such experiences in other parts of the country, seats are expected to fill up quickly. Travellers are advised to book well in advance, especially for weekend journeys, to secure a spot and experience this new, scenic way of travelling between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
