Why Advance Planning is Non-Negotiable
Spontaneous trips are a joy, but not when a pet is involved. Both Indian Railways and domestic airlines have strict, specific protocols for animal travel. These rules are in place for the safety and comfort of your pet, other passengers, and staff. Failing
to comply can result in your pet being denied boarding, significant fines, or last-minute travel in a stressful cargo hold. Each carrier has its own set of requirements, from booking procedures and documentation to container specifications and permissible travel classes. Understanding these well in advance is the key to a smooth and successful journey for you and your four-legged family member.
Train Travel: Navigating Indian Railways
Indian Railways allows passengers to travel with dogs and cats, but only under two specific conditions. The most comfortable option is to book an entire First Class AC (1AC) two-berth coupe or a four-berth cabin under a single PNR. This ensures no co-passenger can object, and your pet can travel with you. This option is only available on trains with a 1AC coach. Pets are strictly forbidden in all other passenger coaches like 2AC, 3AC, and Sleeper Class. The alternative is booking your pet into the brake van, also known as the luggage van, which has a special 'dog box'. For this, you must arrive at the station's parcel office at least three to four hours before departure to complete the formalities. In both cases, you are responsible for your pet’s food and water.
Airline Travel: A Tale of Different Policies
Unlike the uniform rules of the railways, airline policies for pet travel vary significantly. Air India and Akasa Air are currently the most pet-friendly domestic carriers, offering options for pets to fly in the cabin. Air India's 'Paws on Board' program allows pets up to 10kg (including the carrier) to travel in the cabin in economy class. Similarly, Akasa Air permits pets up to 10kg in the cabin. Both airlines accommodate a limited number of pets per flight, so booking at least 48 hours in advance is crucial. For pets heavier than the cabin limit, both Air India and Akasa Air offer options to travel as checked baggage or in the temperature-controlled cargo hold, with weight limits up to 32kg for checked baggage and higher for cargo. Other airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet generally only transport pets as cargo, booked through their separate cargo services, and do not permit them in the passenger cabin. Note that policies can change, and post-merger, Vistara now follows Air India's pet policy.
Essential Documents for Pet Travel
Regardless of whether you choose to travel by train or air, a set of documents is mandatory. The most critical is a fitness-to-travel certificate from a registered veterinarian. For train journeys, this certificate must be issued within 24 to 48 hours of departure. For flights, the window is generally wider, often within 72 hours to 15 days, depending on the airline. An up-to-date vaccination record, especially for rabies, is also non-negotiable. Airlines may have additional requirements, so always confirm what is needed when you book. You will also need your own government-issued ID proof and a copy of your ticket or PNR.
Tips for a Stress-Free Journey
A comfortable pet is a happy traveller. Invest in an IATA-compliant carrier of the right size, allowing your pet to stand up and turn around. Acclimatise your pet to the carrier well before the travel date by making it a familiar, safe space at home. For train journeys, pack enough food and water for the entire trip, along with a leash for breaks at longer station stops. For flights, ensure your pet is hydrated but avoid a large meal right before departure. Most airlines require pets to remain in their carrier for the entire flight duration. Finally, remain calm and reassuring. Your pet will pick up on your stress, so a relaxed owner can make a world of difference to their experience.
