The Foundation: Mastering Layers
Train temperatures are notoriously unpredictable. Carriages can start warm, only to become chilly overnight with the air conditioning. The key to comfort is not one bulky sweater, but several lightweight layers. Start with a base layer of a breathable
fabric like cotton or merino wool. Add a comfortable fleece or a soft cardigan on top. This allows you to easily adjust to the fluctuating temperature, shedding a layer if you get too warm or adding one if the AC is on full blast. Loose-fitting loungewear or athleisure wear is far better than restrictive clothing for a long journey. A large scarf or shawl is also a versatile addition; it can serve as an extra blanket or be bundled up as a makeshift pillow.
The Sound of Silence: Choosing Earplugs
A night train is a symphony of sounds: the clatter of the wheels, station announcements, the hiss of the brakes, and the inevitable snoring of fellow passengers. For light sleepers, a good pair of earplugs is non-negotiable. Foam earplugs are widely available and effective at blocking a broad range of noises. For maximum effectiveness, make sure you roll them tightly before inserting them, allowing them to expand and fill the ear canal. Silicone or wax earplugs are another option, moulding to the outer ear to create a seal. Some travellers even opt for noise-cancelling or dedicated sleep earbuds, which can play white noise to mask disturbances. Whichever you choose, having a way to block out sound can be the difference between a long night and a good night’s sleep.
Blocking Out the Light: A Quality Eye Mask
Just as a train is never truly silent, it is also rarely completely dark. Lights from passing stations, the corridor, and fellow passengers' phone screens can easily disrupt sleep. An eye mask is an essential tool for creating your own personal darkness. Look for a mask that is contoured or has moulded eye cups. These designs put less pressure directly on your eyelids, allowing for more comfortable REM sleep. A good mask should effectively block out all light without feeling restrictive. Pairing a quality eye mask with your earplugs creates a powerful sensory deprivation duo that signals to your brain it’s time to rest.
Creature Comforts for a Better Rest
While trains often provide a small pillow, bringing your own can significantly improve your comfort. A U-shaped neck pillow is a classic for a reason, providing support whether you're in a seat or a berth. Inflatable versions are great for saving space in your luggage. If you tend to get cold, a lightweight travel blanket or a sleeping bag liner adds a welcome layer of warmth and hygiene, creating a familiar cocoon away from home. Easy slip-on shoes or flip-flops are also highly recommended for late-night trips to the bathroom, avoiding the hassle of lacing up boots in the dark.
The Morning Refresh Kit
Arriving at your destination feeling grimy can put a damper on the start of your day. Pack a small, accessible toiletries bag to help you freshen up. Essential items include a toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste, facial wipes, hand sanitiser, and a small deodorant. Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver for reviving your hair. For those travelling in India, toilet paper is a must-have, as it's not always available on board. Having these items on hand means you can step off the train feeling clean, refreshed, and ready to explore.
