The Landmark Route to Paradise
The long-awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is a game-changer for Indian tourism. This engineering marvel connects Jammu Tawi directly to Srinagar, cutting through the challenging Pir Panjal range. What was once a gruelling 8-11 hour
road journey on NH-44 is now a comfortable train ride of under five hours. Vande Bharat services on this route began in 2026, and due to immense popularity, a third train has already been approved to meet demand as of August 2026. The journey itself is an attraction, featuring breathtaking views as the train crosses iconic structures like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge.
Booking Your Vande Bharat Ticket
Securing your seat is a straightforward process, but planning is key, as these trains run with high occupancy. Tickets can be booked via the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Simply enter your origin (e.g., Jammu Tawi - JAT) and destination (Srinagar - SINA), select your travel date, and choose the Vande Bharat service. You will have two classes to choose from: AC Chair Car (CC) and the more premium Executive Chair Car (EC), which offers wider, revolving seats. Fares for the AC Chair Car are approximately ₹700-₹900, while the Executive Chair Car costs around ₹1,300-₹1,500, inclusive of catering. Booking opens 60 days in advance, and it's advisable to book early, especially during peak tourist seasons.
What to Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat Express is designed for comfort and speed, operating at up to 160 kmph. The coaches are fully air-conditioned, with large windows for panoramic views of the stunning landscape. Every seat is equipped with a mobile charging socket. Other modern amenities include automatic doors, CCTV cameras for security, bio-vacuum toilets with sensory taps, and a GPS-based passenger information system. An onboard catering service is included in the ticket price, often featuring local Kashmiri flavours, which enhances the travel experience. For an optimal view of the Chenab Bridge, try to secure a window seat on the right side of the train when travelling from Jammu to Srinagar.
Crafting Your 3-Day Srinagar Itinerary
Once you arrive in Srinagar, the 'Jewel of Kashmir,' a well-planned itinerary will help you make the most of your trip. On Day 1, immerse yourself in the city's serene beauty. Start with a morning shikara ride on the iconic Dal Lake, followed by an afternoon exploring the historic Mughal Gardens like Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. Dedicate Day 2 to higher altitudes with a day trip to Gulmarg, about 55 km from Srinagar. The main attraction here is the Gulmarg Gondola, the second-highest cable car in the world, which offers spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks. On Day 3, consider a journey to Pahalgam, located on the banks of the Lidder River. Explore the scenic Betaab Valley and Aru Valley before heading back to Srinagar for your return journey.
Practical Tips for Your Journey
A few tips can make your trip smoother. Always carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it is mandatory for travel in the region and will be checked during your journey. Pack in layers; even in summer, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, with significant temperature differences between Jammu and the higher altitudes near Banihal. Mobile connectivity can be patchy, especially in the long tunnels like the 11-km Pir Panjal tunnel, so it's a good idea to download entertainment beforehand. Upon arrival at Srinagar station, you can easily find pre-paid taxis and other local transport options to reach your hotel or houseboat.
