The Strategic Return of a Key Route
After a significant pause, the restoration of direct air connectivity between Delhi and Guangzhou marks a pivotal moment for India-China commerce. China Southern Airlines has announced the launch of daily non-stop flights starting September 21, 2026.
This move, alongside services already operated by IndiGo, signals a broader recovery of air links that were suspended for several years. Guangzhou, a major manufacturing and trade hub in Southern China, is a critical destination for Indian businesses involved in sourcing, manufacturing, and trade. The resumption of this route is expected to significantly boost trade, tourism, and business travel, providing a more efficient and seamless connection between the two economic powerhouses.
Airlines, Schedules, and Flight Details
Two primary carriers will now operate direct flights on this route. China Southern Airlines will commence its daily service on September 21, 2026, using a Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Their flight, CZ360, is scheduled to depart Delhi (DEL) at 8:20 PM local time and arrive in Guangzhou (CAN) at 4:15 AM the next day. The return flight, CZ359, departs Guangzhou at 3:35 PM and arrives in Delhi at 7:00 PM. Indian carrier IndiGo also operates a daily non-stop flight on the Delhi-Guangzhou route, providing travellers with competitive options. The direct flight duration is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes, covering a distance of about 3,670 kilometres. Other carriers like Cathay Pacific offer connecting flights via Hong Kong.
Navigating China's Business Visa (M-Visa)
Indian passport holders must secure a business visa, known as the 'M-Visa', before travelling to China; there is no visa-on-arrival for business purposes. The application process has been modernized since late 2025 with the introduction of the China Online Visa Application (COVA) system. Applicants must fill out the form online, upload required documents, and then submit the physical application at a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) located in New Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata. Key documents include a valid passport with at least six months' validity, recent photographs of a specific size (48mm x 33mm), a detailed covering letter from the Indian employer, and, crucially, an official invitation letter from the host company in China. This invitation must be on company letterhead, stamped with the official seal, and clearly state the purpose and duration of the visit.
Guangzhou: The Canton Fair and Beyond
Guangzhou is synonymous with the Canton Fair, China's largest and most prestigious trade event, held every spring and autumn. The Autumn 2026 session is scheduled in three phases: October 15-19 (electronics, machinery), October 23-27 (consumer goods, furniture), and October 31-November 4 (textiles, medical products). For Indian businesses, the fair is an unparalleled opportunity to meet suppliers, discover new products, and forge partnerships. Beyond the fair, Guangzhou is a sprawling hub for wholesale markets, particularly for textiles, garments, leather goods, and cosmetics. The city's advanced infrastructure, including the Baiyun International Airport (CAN) and an efficient metro system, facilitates easy navigation for business purposes.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
While China is generally safe for travellers, it's wise to be prepared. The U.S. State Department has a 'Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution' advisory, mainly citing risks of arbitrary law enforcement. For day-to-day practicalities, remember that many Western apps like Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks, so setting up a VPN or an appropriate eSIM is crucial before you travel. While mobile payment systems are dominant, major international credit cards are now more widely accepted than they were a few years ago. It is always advisable to carry some local currency (Yuan) for smaller transactions. When using taxis, insist on using the meter and ask for a receipt ('fapiao'). Finally, while English may be spoken in major hotels and business settings, having a translation app handy can be invaluable for navigating the city and communicating in local markets.
