The Rise of the 'Pet Parent'
The foundation of this trend is a deep, cultural shift in how Indians view their pets. The term “pet owner” is increasingly being replaced by “pet parent,” and this is more than just a semantic change. A significant majority of Indian pet owners now consider
their pets to be family members or even like children. This 'pet humanisation' trend, amplified by the pandemic which saw a surge in pet adoptions, means that leaving a pet behind is no longer an option for many. Millennials and Gen Z are leading this charge, viewing pet companionship as a core part of their lifestyle and driving demand for services that cater to their furry companions. This emotional bond is fueling a boom in the entire pet care industry, from premium foods to accessories, and now, travel.
From 'Pets Allowed' to 'Pets Welcomed'
The Indian hospitality industry is responding enthusiastically. Major hotel chains and boutique properties alike are rolling out the red carpet for four-legged guests. It’s no longer just a grudging “pets allowed” policy; hotels are actively marketing “pawcation” packages. Leading brands like Marriott, IHCL SeleQtions, and ITC now list numerous pet-friendly properties, offering everything from dedicated pet beds and food bowls to special pet menus and designated play areas. Some luxury resorts even offer pet-minding services, ensuring that human guests can explore attractions knowing their companion is in good hands. This shift is backed by data, with searches for pet-friendly accommodations soaring in recent years, making it a top filter on travel booking platforms.
Top Spots for Paws and People
While you can find pet-friendly options nationwide, certain destinations are becoming clear favourites. For travellers with pets, road trips are the preferred mode of transport, with an overwhelming 93% of Indian travellers favouring the flexibility of a car journey. This has made destinations like Lonavala, with its easy access from Mumbai and Pune, a hotspot for pet-friendly resorts. Hill stations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also popular, offering open spaces for trekking and exploring. Goa, long a favourite for beach lovers, is now also known for its array of pet-friendly villas and cafes. Beyond hotels, vacation rentals and homestays are seeing a huge uptake from pet parents who want more space and a home-like environment for their companions.
Navigating the Journey
Getting there is part of the adventure, and Indian airlines are slowly but surely making it easier. While road trips are dominant, flying with pets is no longer an impossible dream. Airlines like Air India and Akasa Air now permit smaller pets (typically under 7-10kg including the carrier) to travel in the cabin on many domestic routes, a significant relief for pet parents. For larger pets, travel in a temperature-controlled cargo hold is the standard procedure. However, planning is crucial. Flying with a pet requires specific documentation, including a recent vet health certificate and vaccination records, along with an airline-approved carrier. It's essential to book your pet's spot directly with the airline well in advance, as flights have limits on the number of animals allowed.
Tips for a Smooth Petaway
To ensure your holiday is enjoyable for everyone, a little preparation goes a long way. Before booking, always call the hotel directly to confirm their specific pet policies, including any size restrictions or fees. When travelling, pack a familiar blanket or toy to help your pet feel secure in a new environment. Maintain their feeding and walking schedule as much as possible to minimise stress. Acclimatise your pet to their travel carrier well before the journey begins. For road trips, plan for frequent breaks for water and short walks. And finally, ensure your pet has an ID tag with your current contact information, just in case.
