The Predawn Escape
Long before the city’s traffic awakens, the journey begins. Leaving Bengaluru while it’s still dark is key. The goal is to cross the urban sprawl and hit the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, NH275, as the first light cracks the horizon. This initial leg, covering
about 140 kilometres, is about anticipation. It’s a smooth, well-maintained stretch where the focus is on putting distance between you and the city. The air conditioning is on, the playlist is set, and the mind slowly transitions from weekday stress to weekend serenity. The real transformation, however, begins with the first essential stop of the trip.
Breakfast on the Highway
No road trip from Bengaluru is complete without a ritualistic breakfast stop. The highway is dotted with legendary eateries. Towns like Ramanagara and Channapatna give way to Maddur, famous for its crispy Maddur Vada, often paired with a strong filter coffee. Further on, near Bidadi, the allure of soft, fluffy ‘thatte idlis’ (plate idlis) is hard to resist. These stops aren’t just for sustenance; they are a cherished part of the culture of driving out from the city. They are bustling hubs where fellow travellers converge, sharing a common purpose of escape before getting back on the road, refuelled and ready for the hills.
The Green Ascent Begins
After bypassing Mysore, the character of the drive changes dramatically. The landscape, which was flat and functional, begins to undulate. As you drive past Hunsur, the air feels fresher. This is where the Western Ghats start to make their presence felt. Early winter, typically from October, means the monsoon has just retreated, leaving behind a world of lush, saturated greens. The temperature dips noticeably. Windows are rolled down to let in the cool, clean air scented with wet earth and vegetation. The road begins to narrow and curve, demanding more from the driver but offering so much more in return. The journey shifts from a drive into an experience.
Through a Corridor of Mist and Coffee
The final stretch, from Kushalnagar to Madikeri, is the heart of the experience. The road winds through the core of Coorg's coffee country. During early winter, mornings are often shrouded in a thick blanket of mist, reducing visibility but amplifying the beauty. Sunlight filters weakly through the canopy of tall trees, illuminating the swirling fog. On either side, endless expanses of coffee and spice plantations roll across the hills. The vibrant green is punctuated by the occasional splash of colour from flowering plants. Each hairpin bend reveals a new vista—a mist-filled valley, a distant peak, or a cluster of traditional Kodava homes. Driving here is a slow, meditative dance between brake and accelerator.
Pauses and Picturesque Stops
The route is peppered with places that invite a pause. A small detour at Bylakuppe leads to the serene Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, its golden spires a startling contrast to the surrounding greenery. Near Kushalnagar lies the Cauvery Nisargadhama, a beautiful island forest formed by the river, and the Dubare Elephant Camp, where one can see elephants by the riverside. Many drivers pull over at impromptu viewpoints, where the road offers a panoramic view of the hills. These stops are for more than just stretching; they are for breathing in the atmosphere and capturing the moment before the journey continues to its final destination.
Arrival in the Scotland of India
Arriving in Madikeri, the main town of Coorg, feels like the culmination of a pilgrimage. The air is decidedly chilly, especially in the evenings, carrying the faint aroma of coffee blossoms and woodsmoke. Daytime temperatures hover in the low 20s, perfect for exploring, while nights require a light jacket. After five to six hours on the road, turning off the engine at a homestay nestled within a coffee estate signifies a complete disconnect from the city left behind. The symphony of crickets replaces the blare of horns. For the Bengaluru driver, this isn't just reaching a destination; it's the successful completion of a sensory reset, with the journey itself being the primary reward.
