The Standard Path to a UAE Visa
Typically, an Indian citizen planning a trip to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or any other emirate needs to secure a pre-arranged visa. This is usually done through UAE-based airlines like Emirates or Etihad, a travel agency, or a hotel where you plan to stay. The
process involves submitting documents, including your passport, photos, and flight bookings, and waiting for the visa to be processed, which usually takes a few working days. This standard tourist visa is the most common route for millions of visitors each year.
Your US Visa or Green Card Is a Golden Ticket
Here is where your travel history pays off. If you hold a valid Indian passport and also have a US visa (such as a B1/B2 tourist visa) or a US Green Card, you are eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival in the UAE. This special facility allows you to skip the pre-application process entirely. Both your passport and the US-issued document must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in the UAE. This is a significant convenience, turning a multi-day application process into a simple procedure at the airport.
What About UK and EU Visas or Permits?
The privilege extends beyond just US documents. Indian passport holders who have a valid residence permit from the United Kingdom or a European Union (EU) member state can also get a visa on arrival under similar terms. It's important to note a recent change: according to updated guidelines, eligibility for those with only a UK residence visa may be removed, but the facility continues for those with US or EU visas. As of early 2024, some airlines also specify that Indian nationals with any valid visa (not just residence permits) from the UK or EU are eligible. This makes it easier for frequent travellers to Europe to add a UAE stopover to their plans.
The All-Important Fine Print
Several key conditions apply to this visa-on-arrival facility. First, your Indian passport and the qualifying visa or residence permit must both have a minimum of six months' validity from the date you enter the UAE. The visa on arrival is typically granted for a 14-day stay and can be extended once for another 14 days for an additional fee. The standard fee for the initial 14-day visa is around AED 100 or USD 63, though this can vary slightly. It’s a single-entry visa, meaning if you leave the UAE, you would need a new visa to re-enter.
How It Works at the Airport
The process upon landing is straightforward. Instead of heading to the standard immigration queues, you should look for the dedicated 'Visa on Arrival' counters. Have your passport, your qualifying visa or residence card, and a confirmed return or onward ticket ready for inspection. An immigration officer will verify your documents, and you'll be asked to pay the visa fee, which can usually be done with a credit card. After the payment and a quick check, your passport will be stamped, and you'll be officially welcomed into the country.
