Beyond the Metros: A Shifting Landscape
For years, the narrative of India's pet care market was centered around Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. However, the industry is rapidly expanding its footprint. Tier II and Tier III cities are now at the forefront of this boom, transforming from potential
markets into key growth drivers. According to a report from Swiggy Instamart, Tier II and above cities recorded a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care orders, significantly outpacing the metros. Cities like Guwahati, Meerut, Madurai, and Kottayam are seeing explosive growth, with some registering increases of over 500%. This signals a fundamental change in pet ownership patterns and consumer spending across the country.
The Drivers Behind the Boom
Several factors are fueling this expansion into India's heartland. Rising disposable incomes, the growth of nuclear families, and the increasing 'humanization' of pets are primary drivers. Many young professionals and millennials in smaller cities now view pets as integral family members, not just animals. This emotional shift, accelerated by the need for companionship during the pandemic, has led to a willingness to spend more on pet well-being. Furthermore, increased internet penetration provides easier access to information about responsible pet care, nutrition, and wellness, influencing purchasing decisions in non-metro areas. The average age of a pet parent has also dropped significantly, with Gen Z and millennials becoming early adopters of new and premium pet products and services.
From Premium Food to Pet Spas
The demand in these emerging markets goes far beyond basic necessities. Pet food remains the largest segment, but there is a clear trend towards premiumization. Discerning pet parents are opting for grain-free food, wet food, and scientifically formulated diets. However, the growth story doesn't end with nutrition. The demand for services like professional grooming, training, and sophisticated veterinary care is surging. Pet grooming is becoming mainstream, with searches for 'dog shampoo' growing nearly 600% on some platforms. This reflects a desire to provide pets with a quality of life that mirrors their owners' own.
Companies Chasing the Opportunity
Both established players and startups are taking notice and strategically expanding their operations. Brands like Heads Up For Tails and Zigly have been actively opening physical experience centers in cities like Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Indore. Heads Up For Tails, a pioneer in the space, already has over 100 stores across more than 18 cities, with a clear focus on tapping into Tier II markets. Digital-first platforms like Supertails are also expanding their reach, planning to add veterinary clinics and rapid delivery networks in cities such as Pune, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Even global giants like Mars Petcare, owner of Royal Canin and Pedigree, have identified the need to scale infrastructure into Tier II and III cities to ensure quality nutrition and care are accessible beyond the metros.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Despite the immense potential, the expansion into smaller cities is not without its hurdles. Fragmented distribution networks and last-mile delivery can be a significant challenge. There is also a shortage of trained veterinary professionals and groomers outside of the major urban centers. Building brand awareness and educating a large base of first-time pet owners is crucial for sustainable growth. Companies are addressing this by focusing on education-led marketing and creating integrated ecosystems that combine retail with essential services like veterinary consultations. As one industry leader noted, the next phase of growth will depend on how effectively the entire ecosystem collaborates to build consumer trust and ensure the health and safety of pets.
