A Major Upgrade in Power and Speed
The single biggest change isn't a visible feature, but a massive upgrade to the system's backend infrastructure. The new platform is designed to handle significantly more users at once, which has long been the primary challenge during peak hours. The system's booking
capacity has been increased from about 32,000 bookings per minute to over 1.5 lakh per minute. Similarly, the enquiry system, which handles searches for trains and availability, has been boosted to manage over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a tenfold increase from the previous capacity of 4 lakh. This enhancement is specifically aimed at reducing website crashes, slowdowns, and payment failures during the high-demand Tatkal reservation period, providing a more stable and responsive experience for everyone.
A Cleaner Interface with Fewer Distractions
One of the most welcome changes for regular users is the redesigned, cleaner user interface. The new portal promises to eliminate many of the unnecessary pop-ups, flashing graphics, and excessive CAPTCHA prompts that frequently interrupt the booking process. These interruptions are notorious for causing delays, where even a few seconds can mean the difference between getting a confirmed ticket and ending up on the waitlist. By creating a more streamlined path from searching for a train to completing the payment, the revamped site aims to make the entire process quicker and less frustrating.
Master the 'Master List' Feature
While not a new invention, the 'Master List' feature is more crucial than ever for speedy bookings on the revamped site. This tool allows you to save the details of frequently travelling passengers—including name, age, gender, berth preference, and ID card information—directly to your IRCTC profile. Instead of manually typing this information during the booking rush, you can simply select the pre-saved passengers with a single click. Setting this up in advance is one of the most effective strategies to save critical time. To create your list, log in to the IRCTC website, navigate to 'My Profile', and find the 'Add/Modify Master List' option. You can add up to 20 passengers, making it ideal for family travel.
Smarter Tools for Better Planning
The updated portal introduces several new features designed to help passengers plan their journeys more effectively. A new 'Fare Calendar' allows users to compare ticket prices across different dates, which is a significant advantage for those with flexible travel plans looking for the most economical option. Another key improvement is the unified seat availability display. Instead of having to check availability for each class (like Sleeper, 3A, 2A) separately, the new system shows the status for all classes on a single screen, making it much easier to compare options and make a quick decision.
Streamlining the Final Step: Payment
The final moments of booking are often the most stressful, with payment gateways lagging or failing under pressure. To combat this, having a payment strategy is essential. The IRCTC eWallet is a powerful tool for this purpose. It's a prepaid wallet where you can deposit funds in advance. During checkout, paying with the eWallet is nearly instantaneous as it avoids redirects to bank pages and eliminates the need for OTPs, which are common points of failure. To use it, you must complete a one-time registration and KYC verification. Alternatively, having UPI details ready for a quick transaction is the next best option. The goal is to minimize the time spent on the payment page, securing your ticket before it's gone.
