Getting to Your Green Escape
Bhandardara is a popular weekend drive, located about 165 km from Mumbai and 175 km from Pune. The drive itself, especially the final stretch via the Ghoti-Bhandardara road, is part of the experience, with winding roads offering unfolding views of the Western
Ghats. For those preferring rail, the nearest station is Igatpuri, approximately 45 km away. From Igatpuri, you can easily hire a local taxi or take a state transport bus to reach the main village. The journey from either city takes roughly three to four hours, making it an accessible yet wonderfully remote destination.
The Main Event: Chasing Waterfalls
Bhandardara is synonymous with waterfalls during the monsoon. While there are many, two are unmissable. Randha Falls is a powerful spectacle where the Pravara River plunges 170 feet into a gorge. The viewpoint provides a stunning panorama of the roaring water and the huge honeycombs clinging to the cliffs. The other star is the Umbrella Falls, a seasonal beauty that appears only when the Wilson Dam releases water. As the water flows over the semi-circular wall, it creates a unique umbrella-like cascade, best viewed from the small footbridge below. For something more offbeat, explore the area around Ghatghar for smaller, less crowded seasonal falls.
Misty Plateaus and Serene Lakes
The magic of Bhandardara lies in its misty landscapes. The heart of the region is the serene Arthur Lake, a vast reservoir surrounded by the Sahyadri peaks. A drive around the lake reveals ever-changing vistas of clouds rolling over the water and lush hills. For a truly breathtaking, off-the-grid viewpoint, head to Ghatghar, about 22 km from the main town. The Ghatghar viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the entire Sahyadri range, often draped in a thick blanket of fog that clears intermittently to reveal the stunning valleys below. It’s a perfect spot to appreciate the scale and tranquility of the mountains.
A Touch of Ancient History: Amruteshwar Temple
Beyond the natural wonders, Bhandardara holds a piece of ancient history. Tucked away in the village of Ratanwadi is the Amruteshwar Temple, an architectural marvel dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to be over 1,200 years old, this temple is built in the distinct Hemadpanthi style from intricately carved black stone. Reaching it is an adventure in itself; you can either take a boat across Arthur Lake followed by a short walk or drive through a rustic route. The temple’s serene location on the banks of the Pravara River, with the Ratangad fort looming in the background, makes it a peaceful and spiritually enriching stop.
Essential Weekend Tips
To make the most of your trip, plan for a one- or two-night stay. Accommodation ranges from the MTDC resort with prime lake views to various private hotels and homestays. Booking in advance is wise, especially for weekend travel during the peak monsoon months of July and August. The weather can be unpredictable, so pack a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as paths near waterfalls can be slippery. While major spots are accessible, some of the more remote areas have rough roads, so a car with good ground clearance is advisable. Don’t forget to try the local Maharashtrian cuisine at small eateries for an authentic taste of the region.
