Your Watchdog for Food Safety
Food Safety Connect is an FSSAI initiative designed to create a responsive and reliable system for managing consumer concerns. It’s not just one website, but a network of channels including a dedicated portal, a mobile app, and even social media, all
feeding into one grievance redressal system. The core idea is to involve citizens in monitoring and improving food safety across the country. By making it simple to report issues, FSSAI aims to quickly identify violations that might otherwise go unnoticed, from misleading labels on packaged goods to unhygienic conditions at a local eatery.
Why Your Proof Matters More Than Ever
Simply saying something is wrong is often not enough. The FSSAI's system places a strong emphasis on evidence-backed complaints. This shift is a game-changer because it helps authorities verify claims more effectively and take swift, targeted action. When you provide clear evidence, your complaint moves from being an anecdote to a documented incident that regulators can act upon. This focus on proof ensures that investigations are credible and that Food Business Operators (FBOs) are held accountable. A complaint supported by a photograph, a bill, and a clear description is much more powerful and likely to lead to a resolution.
What Counts as Strong Evidence?
Before you file a complaint, gathering the right proof is crucial. The most effective pieces of evidence include clear photographs or videos of the issue, whether it's an insect in your meal, mould on a product, or an expired date on the packaging. Always keep the purchase receipt or bill, as it proves where and when you bought the item. If possible, do not throw away the product itself, as its packaging contains vital information like the brand name, manufacturer's address, and the FSSAI license number, which is a key identifier for any complaint. For health-related issues like food poisoning, medical reports can also serve as powerful supporting documents.
How to File Your Complaint: A Step-by-Step Guide
FSSAI has made the process straightforward. The primary method is through the 'Food Safety Connect' app, available on both Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, or via the web portal. First, you'll need to register with your mobile number or email. Once logged in, select the option to lodge a new complaint. You will be prompted to enter details about the food business, including its name and address. If you have the 14-digit FSSAI number (often found on the bill or packaging), include it. Next, you'll select the category of your complaint, such as adulteration, expired product, or poor hygiene. This is where you upload your evidence—photos, videos, and a copy of the bill. After reviewing all details, submit the complaint. The system will generate a unique tracking ID for you to monitor its progress.
What Happens After You Hit 'Submit'?
Once lodged, your complaint and its evidence are forwarded to the relevant authorities for action. Depending on the nature of the issue, it may be sent directly to the Food Business Operator (FBO) for an initial response or to the designated Food Safety Officer in your state for investigation. You can use your unique tracking ID on the Food Safety Connect platform to see the status of your complaint. If the initial response is unsatisfactory, the matter can be escalated to state-level authorities. Potential outcomes range from directing the business to take corrective action to inspections, and in serious cases, restraining the sale of a product.
