Understanding the 'Free' Visa Offer
The much-discussed “free” UAE visa is a targeted tourism promotion by Abu Dhabi, not a blanket visa-free entry policy for all Indians. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched an initiative that covers the full cost
of a UAE entry visa for eligible Indian tourists. This limited-time offer is designed to boost tourism in the capital. The program runs from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is initially capped at 20,000 visas. Essentially, for qualifying travellers, the visa fee, which is approximately Dh285 ($77), is waived. It's crucial to understand this is a subsidy applied to specific holiday packages, not an independent visa you can apply for directly.
Who is Eligible for the Offer?
Eligibility for this specific free visa program is narrowly defined. To qualify, you must be an Indian passport holder travelling from India. The offer is not available to those travelling from other countries. The core of the program is its link to a complete holiday package. Travellers cannot simply book a flight and expect a free visa. The offer is only valid for those who book their trip through a participating travel agency or a recognized online travel agency (OTA). Independent bookings will not qualify.
The Fine Print: Key Conditions
The conditions attached to this offer are non-negotiable. The most important requirement is a mandatory stay of at least three consecutive nights in a hotel within Abu Dhabi. Bookings for hotels in Dubai or other emirates, even if the arrival airport is Abu Dhabi, do not qualify. Furthermore, the booking must include a confirmed return flight ticket from India. The travel itself must take place between August 1 and October 31, 2026. Since the initiative is limited to the first 20,000 visas, travellers are advised to confirm the offer's availability with their travel partner before finalising payments, as the cap could be reached before the October deadline.
How to Get the Visa
You cannot apply for this visa through official government portals or at the embassy. The entire process is managed by the travel partner you book with. Once you book a qualifying package—which includes the return flight and a minimum three-night Abu Dhabi hotel stay—the participating travel agency or OTA will handle the visa application on your behalf. They process the paperwork, and DCT Abu Dhabi reimburses them for the visa cost, making it free for you as the traveller. You will need to provide the necessary documents, such as a passport copy and photograph, to your travel agent to facilitate the process.
Other Visa Options for Indians
If you don't qualify for the free Abu Dhabi promotion, there are other routes to enter the UAE. A popular option is the visa on arrival, available to Indian passport holders who have a valid US visa or Green Card, or a residence permit from the UK or an EU country. This visa is typically granted for 14 days and can be obtained at the airport for a fee. Additionally, standard tourist visas for 30 or 60 days can be applied for in advance through airlines like Emirates or Etihad, or through authorized travel agents. For short layovers, transit visas for 48 or 96 hours are also available, though these are not free and must be applied for beforehand.
