For decades, a career in India's space sector meant one thing: working for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). But a pivotal policy shift in 2020 changed the landscape forever. The government opened the sector to private enterprise, creating
a single-window agency called IN-SPACe to promote and authorise private space activities. This has ignited a commercial boom, with projections suggesting India's space economy could rocket from around $8-9 billion today to over $44 billion by 2033. This isn't just about launching satellites; it's about building a robust, multi-faceted industry with private players involved in every step, from manufacturing components to providing satellite-based data services.
From Agency to Ecosystem
The result of this liberalisation is a vibrant startup ecosystem. India is now home to over 400 space-tech startups, a dramatic increase from just a handful a few years ago. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Pixxel are becoming household names, attracting significant investment and top talent. Skyroot, for instance, successfully launched a private rocket, while Agnikul has pioneered 3D-printed engines. This shift from a single, state-led agency to a dynamic ecosystem of public and private players has fundamentally broadened the definition of a space career in India. It has also spurred a healthy movement of talent, with experienced professionals from ISRO sometimes moving to the private sector, accelerating innovation.
More Than Just Rocket Science
The most exciting part of this new era is the sheer diversity of roles. The space economy needs more than just aerospace engineers and astrophysicists. Private companies are aggressively hiring software developers, data scientists, AI and machine learning experts, and cybersecurity professionals to build the backbone of their operations. As these startups grow, they also require managers, finance professionals, lawyers specializing in space policy, and marketing and communications teams. Downstream services, which involve using satellite data for applications in agriculture, telecommunications, and disaster management, are expected to generate the majority of future revenue, creating thousands of jobs for data analysts and geospatial experts.
The Skills for Liftoff
For young professionals eager to join this sector, the focus is on a blend of core engineering and modern tech skills. A strong foundation in mechanical, electronics, or computer science engineering remains crucial. However, proficiency in programming languages like Python and C++, experience with data analytics and machine learning, and knowledge of embedded systems are now highly sought after. Private companies are looking for talent that can work in cross-functional teams and adapt quickly to market demands. Entry-level salaries in the private sector are becoming increasingly competitive, with some reports indicating starting packages between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh per annum, often with the added allure of stock options.
