In response, Indian Railways has introduced the Amrit Bharat Express, a new category of train designed specifically for long-distance, budget-conscious travellers. The newly regularised 15095/15096 Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express, which began service in late August 2026, aims to provide a faster, more comfortable, and modern travel experience without the premium price tag of trains like the Vande Bharat.
The Speed Advantage: Cutting Down Journey Time
One of the most significant improvements offered by the Amrit Bharat Express is its speed. The train utilizes a “push-pull” configuration, with a locomotive at both the front and rear. This technology allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing the overall travel time significantly. The Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express is slated to cover the approximately 780-kilometre distance in about 14 hours. This is a noticeable improvement compared to many other popular services on the route, some of which can take up to 16 or 18 hours. The train is cleared to operate at a maximum speed of 130 kmph, making it one of the faster non-premium options available to passengers on this corridor.
A New Standard of Comfort and Amenities
The Amrit Bharat Express is not an AC-only train; it is composed of non-air-conditioned sleeper and general second-class coaches, targeting the majority of travellers on this route. However, the onboard experience is a world away from older coaches. Passengers will find ergonomically designed seats and berths, and semi-permanent couplers that ensure a jerk-free ride, eliminating the sudden jolts during starts and stops. For convenience, each berth is equipped with mobile charging sockets, foldable snack tables, and bottle holders. The toilets have also been modernised with features like an automatic hygiene odour control system and better flushing mechanisms. Radium illumination strips on the floor improve visibility at night, enhancing both safety and convenience.
Fare Structure and Value for Money
While offering a significantly upgraded experience, the Amrit Bharat Express remains an affordable option. The fares are intentionally kept lower than premium trains, catering to the mass mobility segment. Reports suggest that the base fare for Amrit Bharat trains is approximately 15-17% higher than that of conventional mail or express trains for the same distance. This slight increase in price buys a faster journey and a host of modern amenities that were previously unavailable in non-AC coaches. For the regular traveller, this presents a compelling value proposition: a near-premium experience at a fraction of the cost, striking a balance between affordability and comfort.
Schedule and Booking Information
The Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express operates as a weekly service for now. Train number 15095 departs from Gorakhpur every Thursday at 10:45 PM, reaching Delhi Junction the next day at 12:50 PM. The return service, train number 15096, leaves Delhi Junction every Friday at 2:00 PM and arrives in Gorakhpur at 6:25 AM on Saturday. The train has several important stops, including Gonda, Sitapur, Bareilly, and Moradabad, improving connectivity for several mid-sized towns along the way. Tickets can be booked through the IRCTC website and app, as well as other authorised online travel portals. Given its modern features and competitive pricing, seats on this new service are expected to be in high demand.
