Switch to a Lighter Cleanser
During the monsoon, high humidity signals your skin to produce more oil, or sebum. When this excess oil mixes with sweat and environmental pollutants, it can lead to clogged pores and acne. Heavy, cream-based cleansers that are perfect for winter can feel
too rich. Instead, opt for a gentle, foaming or gel-based face wash. These formulations effectively remove grime and excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Cleansing twice a day is a good rule of thumb, but it's also wise to wash your face after being caught in the rain to remove pollutants carried in the water.
Embrace Lightweight Hydration
It's a common mistake to skip moisturiser during humid weather, assuming the air's moisture is enough. However, this can backfire. When your skin is dehydrated, it may overcompensate by producing even more oil. The solution isn't to skip this step, but to switch your product. Trade heavy creams for lightweight, non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) formulas. Gel or water-based moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid are excellent choices, as they hydrate the skin without feeling greasy or heavy.
Don't Neglect Sunscreen
Cloudy skies can be deceptive, leading many to believe sunscreen is unnecessary during the monsoon. This is a critical error. Up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through cloud cover. These rays, particularly UVA rays, are responsible for long-term damage like premature ageing and pigmentation. Furthermore, wet surfaces like roads and puddles can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure. To stay protected, make a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. For humid conditions, look for lightweight gel or water-resistant formulas that feel comfortable on the skin.
Exfoliate, But Gently
With increased oil production and dead skin cells, exfoliation becomes crucial for preventing clogged pores. However, it's important not to overdo it. Harsh physical scrubs can damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation and even more oiliness. A gentle approach is best. Exfoliating one to two times a week is generally sufficient for most skin types. Consider mild chemical exfoliants containing ingredients like salicylic acid, which can penetrate into pores to dissolve oil and debris effectively.
Prevent Fungal Infections
The warm, damp environment of the monsoon is a perfect breeding ground for fungi. This can lead to uncomfortable conditions like ringworm and athlete's foot. Prevention is key. Always dry your skin thoroughly after showering, paying special attention to skin folds such as underarms, the groin area, and between the toes. It's also vital to change out of wet or damp clothes and socks as soon as possible. Wearing breathable fabrics like cotton can help reduce moisture buildup. If you are prone to such infections, using an antifungal powder in high-risk areas can be a helpful preventive measure.
Incorporate Key Ingredients
Certain skincare ingredients are particularly beneficial during the rainy season. Niacinamide (a form of Vitamin B3) is a superstar for humid weather, as it helps regulate oil production, strengthen the skin barrier, and reduce redness. Antioxidants like Vitamin C can help protect the skin from pollution and brighten your complexion. For those with acne-prone skin, ingredients like salicylic acid are great for keeping pores clear, while tea tree oil offers natural antibacterial properties.
