Choose Your Perch Wisely
Before you buy, assess your space. The most common type of window hammock relies on heavy-duty suction cups. These are fantastic for renters as they don’t require drilling holes. However, they only work on smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass. If you have
older windows with divided panes, textured glass, or thin, fragile panels, suction cups might not be the best choice. In those cases, look for perches that screw into the window frame (if your landlord allows it) or tension-supported perches that wedge securely into the sill and frame. Also, check the weight limit. If you have a majestic Maine Coon or two bonded cats who love to cuddle, you’ll need a hammock rated for a higher weight capacity to avoid any catastrophic failures.
The Secret to Suction Cup Success
This is where most people go wrong. A suction cup that fails is almost always due to an improperly prepared surface or a faulty cup. First, clean the window with an alcohol-based cleaner, not a standard glass cleaner, which can leave behind a slick residue. Wipe the area completely dry with a lint-free cloth. Next, prepare the suction cups themselves. A pro tip shared across countless forums is to soak the cups in hot water for a few minutes before installation. This softens the plastic, making it more pliable and able to create a stronger, more complete seal against the glass. Press firmly from the center outwards to push out any air bubbles. A tiny, almost invisible layer of Vaseline or chapstick on the rim of the cup can also create an unbeatable airtight seal, but use it sparingly to avoid a greasy mess.
Location, Location, Location
Where you place the hammock is just as important as how you install it. Cats are solar-powered creatures, so a spot that gets plenty of morning or afternoon sun is a guaranteed winner. This turns the hammock into a warm, cozy napping spot. Also, consider the view. A window overlooking a garden with birds, a busy street with passersby, or even just a tree with rustling leaves provides what cat behaviourists call “feline enrichment,” or what cat parents lovingly call “Cat TV.” It’s a crucial source of mental stimulation for indoor cats, preventing boredom and potential destructive behaviours. Avoid placing it directly above a radiator or in a drafty area, as extreme temperatures can make it uncomfortable.
Reinforce for Peace of Mind
Even with perfect suction, some cat parents prefer an extra layer of security, especially for heavier cats. You don’t need to be an engineer to add a simple back-up. A common trick is to place a sturdy piece of furniture, like a small cat tree, stool, or the back of a sofa, directly underneath the hammock. This doesn’t support the hammock full-time but acts as a safety net, catching it if a suction cup were to ever give way. For hammocks supported by wires, ensure the wires are not frayed and are securely attached. Some resourceful owners even add a small, clear adhesive hook to the window frame below the perch and loosely loop a string around the hammock frame as a final failsafe.
Make it an Irresistible Destination
You can build the best hammock in the world, but your cat has to want to use it. Don't be discouraged if they ignore it at first; cats can be wary of new things. The key is to make it their space. Place their favourite soft blanket or an old t-shirt that smells like you on the perch. When they first approach it, reward their curiosity with their favourite treat. You can also sprinkle a little catnip on the surface to make it more enticing. Never force your cat onto the hammock. Instead, use positive reinforcement. Play with a wand toy near the hammock, encouraging them to hop on it themselves during play. Once they realise it’s a stable, comfortable spot with a great view, it will likely become their new favourite place.
Perform Regular Maintenance Checks
A window hammock is not a set-it-and-forget-it piece of furniture. To ensure your cat’s safety, build a quick check into your weekly cleaning routine. Press down firmly on the hammock to test its stability. Give each suction cup a firm tug and check the seal. Over time, temperature changes can cause the seals to weaken. At least once a month, it's wise to completely detach, clean, and re-attach the suction cups to maintain their grip. Keep the fabric sling clean as well; most are machine-washable, but check the manufacturer’s instructions. A clean, secure hammock is a safe and happy hammock.
